Pros: Excellent to get songs and make your own CDs
Cons: Not being able to get songs copywrited out
The Bottom Line: Use this to get as many songs you can get because the music is the reason the artists should be in the business they're in.

| Singforeva's Full Review: Napster |
The mass appeal of Napster has changed the music industry forever. When I first heard of it, I was over peoples’ houses that had it downloaded on their systems. I had a bunch of songs in mind. I eventually got it for myself over jealousy of everyone else having his or her own mixed CDs. One of my best friends had made over 50 from Napster with 2 phone lines.
I got a CD burner about a month ago. The upsetting thing is I had it installed at Best Buy and now it won’t write. I think it popularized the use of them beyond storage reasons.
I feel the artists can not deal with the use of a service like this. I think Napster has made what was always done only easier. No one ever said if you tape my song off the “advertising” of radio or from a friend’s tape/CD that I will now not be in business anymore. I still see the high price tag artists waste their money on. CD sales have actually increased from Napster’s sampling. And many of the angry anti-Napster artists are those who have enough money for a lifetime already. I could understand how hard it is to be an artist today, wanting to be one myself. Yet, the veterans have to be conceited. They want their fans to only “worship” them through sales and merchandising. These types do not care about the quality of music they present or how it affects peoples’ lives. I watched, “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” not too long ago with singing celebrities. I saw the lead singer of Metallica on there, which I despised. He made the comment of “where you get this-Napster?” when Regis asked him if he liked the theme music. He ended up only getting about $32,000 after that sly comment. I think just simple sarcasm hurt his charity.
Napster is about to me, sharing the wonderful music of our favorite artists. I do not see it as stealing since people borrowed and copied songs since music has started. I would even pay a monthly fee to get any song I want. It’s getting harder to find songs, which only hurts the particular singer or group I’m trying to find. I love getting remixes and rare songs, and buying the music is no longer in my price range.
We live in a sue-happy society that just wants to find something negative to get easy money for. I think if celebrities knew how to budget their money, these services and others like Napster would not be an issue. I guess they just spend the bulk of their money on these good-life “necessities”. So I feel no guilt not buying their albums. I think it also woke up those who only created a few hit songs to con you into buying the album, to only be disappointed by the lack of quality in the other songs. CD singles cost about 1/3 of what CDs cost. I think it’s ridiculous that you go buy the hard to find singles with 1 song remixed a few times costing $6. Napster has created business by letting us find out if an album is worth our money, and artists abuse this free advertising. I guess the artists are not flattered by us users trying so hard to get songs and spending hours just to get their songs, sometimes many sessions to get songs.
There are also many talented people who use the service to get their music out there. So often, there are talented people who don’t get their share of fame, because of marketability. Milli Vanilli, (as told on VH1), were basically attractive male models posing as the artists learning some dance moves and lip synching. I think it’s sad we ignore the real talented people who may lack looks and other essential moneymaking tricks. LL Cool J also did not show the real singer featured in his “Doin’ It” video, because she was pregnant, instead featuring hoochie girls. I also feel a talented woman like Jessica Simpson is not given as much credit as her other blond counterparts. I feel this is because of her admitted-from-the-start relationship with Nick Lachey. I think many celebrities hide relationships because of this. Why do you think Britney and Justin did?
I feel Napster allows us the blind approach to music. It lets us sample artists giving us choices. We can hate it, go out and buy the album or just copy it onto our on mixed CD. I think the selfishness in the industry is the real scare. Instead of worrying about the fans and the music, they worry about how many cars are in the drive of their multi-million dollar homes. Some artists are great with volunteering, often on game shows. I praise Limp Bizkit for allowing Napster to sponsor their famous free tour. I am a big fan of theirs and bigger now from getting to hear more songs from Napster and seeing how excellent the lyrics I never knew were. Fred Durst and the group going out to do free concerts (paid by Napster), shows the group is caring. They stayed in major cities a few nights to allow more to see them. I wish I could have attended, but they are the kind of group whom I’d be glad to pay to see.
I’ve gotten a lot of helpful songs on here I never would have heard except on the radio. I would not mind paying a fee to use the service if the court decides so. I just do not want to pay for poor quality again on mass-produced CDs. My CD burner I hope will work (when I get it fixed), to get me what I love and need in life.
Tips: Be careful when you download songs. Some songs I downloaded were of full length and when I went to put them on CD-the whole song was not there. Make sure you always delete the incomplete songs to maximize disk space. Also find users and friends on your hot list to stay so you can get a lot you want. My user name is Singforeva if you want to add me-except I don't know how many songs the new version I have is letting me share! :-)
