Kiwi speak ~" how to talk like a local " write off
by hollynz | May 20 '02
Shock, horror ... there was no Travellers Glossary category for New Zealand. Call me a rebel if you will but I am publishing my contribution in General Itineraries.

... and it made me smile. Heading back to the Cooks in April of next year and have to say that I love the Kiwi accent - of both the NZ visitors and the Cook Islands locals.

Added you to my Web of Trust - don't know how I missed doing it before (certainly thought I had).

Good on ya mate.

I'd forgotten just how many different words those forrin people needed to have explained to them.

You forgot to mention Hobbits - the indigenous people of New Zild, recogniseable from their bare feet.

Great, I love this! I've had to do some brushing up on this lingo over the years being married to a kiwi, but his accent and "kiwi speak" are muted by 18 years in the states.

I have to admit that I was totally lost my first week in New Zealand. My husband sounds completely different than the rest of the country, in fact his family teased him endlessly about his "American" accent.

I am printing this out so he and I both can have an idea of what people are saying when we go back.
Thanks again,
Shauna

I was speaking a lot of those words last month. (Reply to this comment)

I went home to England on vacation (holiday) and my Dad told me I speak like a 'Yank'. I use trunk and hood, and of course was brought up using bonnet and boot.

Your review put a smile on my face.

Susie.

You have a "pee-yun"? (Reply to this comment)
by CoolGobi
When I was in NZ we (Americans) used to tease our NZ friend because she used to say "pee-yun" for "pen"!

As for localspeak in San Francisco, you never refer to the city as "Frisco".

Our beloved rugby team , The All Blacks, got the name while touring Britain back in the dark ages.

They came onto the field wearing black shirts, black shorts and black socks. Some sports writer somewhere mentioned the team, dressed an all black and the name stuck fast.

Black is now our National Colour for sporting events.

Capsicum..... (Reply to this comment)

I has quite forgotten about capsicum. I seem to remember seeing that on a few Australian menus as well. Great review! Thanks for the glossary. Will take it along if I get down that way again. Tom Barnes

the biggest surprise for us (Yanks) might be... (Reply to this comment)
by jkkelley
...that to be on the All Blacks does not imply racial segregation. (I watched a test, or a match, or a game, or whatever, once. I thought the Haka was great--one hell of a tradition.)

You know, I do believe the only way I'll ever learn to tell you, Australians and British apart by accent is if I'm put in company of one of each, at the same time, for a month or so. When in this country, at least, it seems 'Kiwi' is taken good-naturedly (as 'Yank' should be in Auckland, for example). When I was playing hockey, me and Pig-Pen used to drink at a bar with a New Zealander bartender named Desmond and a generously proportioned waitress we had named 'the Goddess'. Upon entry, I always bellowed, "Hey, Kiwi!" to the latter's delight, and he would always reassure us: "The God Dess (he always broke the word up so) is heah!"

We were pigs. But we had a lot of fun drinking Kiwi's beer and ogling the Goddess. (At times the saliva puddle became embarrassing, but when you're a hockey player, people assume you're just mentally retarded from too many cross-checks to the temple, and prone to sudden remorseless violence, so they tend to leave you be.)

Q: Why don’t New Zealanders use vowels?
A: They haven’t got any, the Aussies stole them.

Aha! So that's where they went!

Wonderful review, you rebel. Made me laugh out loud.

Still trying to figure out ekka dymocks,
