Over the past year, the number of job listings on the online job resources has declined significantly, at least in the PR/Marketing/Publishing fields. Despite the lower number of listings, HotJobs has consistently had a great selection of San Francisco/Bay Area jobs in these fields.
Searching is straightforward -- you can search by keywords, location, and job interests, and include/block search firms from your results. There are 2 quirks to the search process that have driven me crazy:
1.) Even if you deselect the "Check to search the greater metro area of the city you specify" checkbox for San Francisco, for instance, you keep seeing jobs in Hayward. Last time I checked, San Francisco and Hayward were not the same city, or even in the same county.
2.) Employers are allowed to specify multiple locations in their listing. Thus, a search for jobs in San Francisco can often give you job results for companies in Austin, Texas.
The Listings
The job listings themselves are of a high quality. Employers are allowed (perhaps even encouraged?) to provide a brief bio of the company. Clicking on the hyperlinked company name at the top of a listing brings up a more detailed listing of company statistics (if HotJobs has their profile on file) such as number of employees, revenue, and headquarters location, plus a link to their Web site. This makes it easy to find out more about a company before sending in your resume.
The bottom of the company detail page also lists the other jobs they have listed on HotJobs, making it easy to see what their hiring patterns are like.
From the job listings, you can either save the listing you are viewing to your personal job folder, apply online using the hotjobs system, or email the listing to a friend or yourself. The email function is nice to have although they only include the basics from the listing -- you have to come back to the site to apply for the job.
Beyond the HotJobs Listings
Although the meat of the site is its listings database, HotJobs has tried to offer up a selection of content geared to helping job seekers move through their search process. Content of note includes:
* a community section for swapping job search tips or getting help polishing your resume
*links to industry resources (organized by the same categories you use to search for jobs)
* Relocation resources (in case your dream job is thousands of miles away from where you live now)
* A benefits glossary
* Career advice articles
Overall, a great place to review job listings, and to see what companies are up-and-coming in your area.
