Great little car but pricey

Pros: Fast, good handling & interior No significant quirks
Cons: Lack of Quattro option, price.
The Bottom Line: Shop around, it's a competitive segment and this is a competitive car.

I drove a base model 2006 A3 loaner for a couple of days while my 2004 A4 was in for maintenance. I found this smaller Audi to offer the traditional Audi-ness in a nice compact package.

Since the A3 I drove was a base model it lacked the usual options such as the sunroof, leather seats and steering wheel, upgraded stereo, trip computer, etc. What it did have was the DSG transmission (albeit without the steering wheel paddles) and 17" wheels (exactly like the ones from my A4 sport package).

The interior was similar in layout to the A4 with the location of the radio above the climate control unit and the lighting controls on the left of the steering wheel. The annoying thing was the card drawer (which I use to store coins in my car) was slanted so that you can't see what's inside without leaning over. Without the trip computer the centre screen on the instrument panel is just blank. Maybe it's because I'm used to seeing something there that I always got the feeling I forgot to turn on something. Otherwise everything was placed where it should be and, once I found a comfortable driving position, all the controls were easily within reach. The radio was the lower end Concert unit which was easy to use but the sound sounded muffled. I'm not sure if there was a sub but it didn't sound like it.

With the 2.0T engine and the DSG transmission the A3 is quite quick. Noticeably quicker than my A4's 1.8T engine, probably because of the lack of Quattro and the overall lighter weight of the car. The low-end torque is great in stop and go traffic and the car merges onto the highway easily. It accelerated up to 150km/h on the highway without any drama and it's only then that you notice some wind noise, reminding you that you're going too fast. The DSG transmission is much smoother than the Tiptronic on my A4, with 6 gears from which it can automatically select for you or from which you can choose manually with the /- shift gate. Each shift is silky smooth with no jerking of the car whatsoever. Fuel economy was slightly better with my A4 even though most of my driving with the A3 was quite spirited.

Handling in the A3 was surprisingly good though the steering was too light for my liking. Most 270 degree on-ramps could be taken at 65km/h without any squealing of the tires or any fear on your part. The ride was quiet and handled potholes and such quite well, without the jarring that you would expect in sportier cars.

Overall I couldn't find any significant faults with the car and rather enjoyed my time with it. The only issue is if you're willing to pay Audi's prices for this car, considering that, with options, it's approaching the price of an A4. Also, the lack of Quattro with the 2.0T engine is disappointing because that's one of Audi's main selling features. If you decide to forego an AWD car then there's many other choices in this price range and while this car is quite good, it may not be your best option for the price.
