XXXXer's BOTTOM LINE Part 2: THE BEST EXTREME WRESTLING MATCHES
May 16 '02
The Bottom Line DISCLAIMER: This review is VERY thorough, and contains descriptions of graphic violence. If you really want my opinion, read on brave soul.... READ ON!
In the tradition of XXXXer’s Bottom Line: The Top Ten EXTREME Wrestling Tapes...
Today is part 2 of the bottom line: my picks for the best extreme wrestling matches that I have seen in my ten plus years as a wrestling aficionado.
You may well as what qualifications have I to be able to critique these wrestling matches, and to that I will only say that I’ve done my homework, and even participated in some ultra violent “hardcore” backyard wrestling. That’s me in the wrestling tape section of the local video shop with those nasty looking scars... I’ve taken shots to the head, been set on fire, had legitimate beer bottles cracked and broken over my skull, been carved open with broken glass (all in the name of good family entertainment) and have the scars to prove it...but enough about what I do with a video camera for fun....
The matches I’ve selected for your reading pleasure are not chosen because of their demonstration of great technical wrestling, most of them contain little or no actual wrestling moves. What they do have is some of the sickest and most brutal wrestling “bumps” (the term used to describe any kind of impact that a wrestler takes in a wrestling ring... the term comes from the wrestler getting “bumped” onto the mat) you will ever come across.
Also, for the most part I’ve avoided so-called “hardcore” wrestling where wrestlers purposely cut themselves to get some “juice” (blood) to flow just for the purpose of having a crowd pop. This practice, called “blading” in the industry, is solely to add effect, and for the most part, 3/4 of all blood spilled in a wrestling ring is accomplished through this practice. What you’ll get on this list is the most insane, unbelievable, and just plain violent wrestling matches you’ll see.
In attempting to identify these matches, I’ve listed the wrestling tape in which you can find these matches.
Also, in describing why these matches fit the bill, some “spoilers” of the matches will undoubtedly be revealed. Also, I’d just like to say that these matches aren’t the kind of stuff you’ll see on your average Monday night wrestling show. This stuff is violent as all hell, so don’t bother reading if you can’t handle it.
Hope you enjoy the list!
++ ATSUSHI ONITA, Mr. GANOSUKE, and NIYAMA vs. Mr. POGO, MIKE AWESOME and HIDEKI HOSAKA
--Found on the Best of the Japanese Explosion Matches
“Electrified Pool Water Match.” Features one of the most unique settings for a wrestling match, and one of the coolest stipulations, I’ve ever seen. A wrestling ring is set up in the middle of a pool filled with water. Whenever a wrestler hits the water, an explosion goes off right beside them. This makes for a pretty neat concept, with the last wrestler standing in the ring declared the winner.
++ MEGUMI KUDO vs. COMBAT TOYODA
--Found on FMW: King of the Death Match
An electrified barbed wire match between two women. Each time one of these women hits the side of the ring, an explosion goes off as the wrestler feels the wrath of a charge of electricity. A brutal match, with Toyoda getting repeatedly dropped right on her neck and head.
++ GEDOH and JEDOH vs. KANEMURA and NAKAMAKI
--Found on the Best of the Japanese Fire Matches
The infamous “Scramble Fire Tag Death Match.” Where to begin... the ropes surrounding the ring are lit ablaze, and flames lick up to a height equal to the competitors in this match. This match ends with a sickening spot as Gedoh pours gasoline into a big pool in the center of the ring. After igniting the pool, Kanemura is powerbombed right into the flames. Upon hitting the gasoline, his entire backside and head ignite, and he runs from the ring completely engulfed in flames. After finally being extinguished (the rule is wrestling is you don’t want to be on fire for more than three seconds otherwise you’ll risk getting serious burns and this guy was on fire for a good five or six seconds at least), the extent of the burns are revealed. His entire ring outfit has been BURNED INTO HIS BACK by the extreme heat. This is SICK!!!!!!
++ Mr. POGO vs. MITSUHIRO MATSUNAGA
--Found on Best of W*ING Wrestling 1992
The most violent wrestler in Japan, Mr. Pogo takes on “Mr. Danger” Matsunaga. The ring is surrounded by barbed wire, and there’s also a baseball bat that has been wrapped in barbed wire available. Pogo wins by setting Matsunaga’s head on fire with rubbing alcohol, resulting in Matsunaga’s head being scorched.
++ CACTUS JACK vs. TERRY GORDY
--Found on IWA 1995 KING OF THE DEATH MATCH TOURNAMENT
If there’s one tape that will leave you speechless, it’s this one. This match features a bed filled to the brim with thumbtacks in the ring. Cactus’s head is STOMPED into a pile of tacks on two different occasions, and the tacks are fully embedded in his cranium.
++ HIROSHI ONO vs. SHOJI NAKAMAKI
--Found on IWA 1995 KING OF THE DEATH MATCH TOURNAMENT
Another match from the tournament featuring beds of thumbtacks. These two guys have thumbtacks embedded everywhere on their bodies by the end of this one; they end up looking like human pincushions. As a bonus, we get several disgusting views of their bloody arms with thumbtacks completely stuck into them.
++ TERRY FUNK vs. CACTUS JACK
--Found on IWA 1995 KING OF THE DEATH MATCH TOURNAMENT
This is the finals match featuring boards covered in barbed wire that have double packed C-4 explosives attached. Whenever one of these guys hits the boards, the C-4 explodes. Funk is burned so badly by the bombs that he can barely move, and Cactus doesn’t fare much better. By the end of this, the color of the flesh on Jack and Funk’s arms have changed color, going from healthy looking skin to mangled, charred flesh.
++ MITSUHIRO MATSUNAGA vs. KENDO NAGASAKI
-- Found on History of the Big Japan Death Match
Another unbelievable stipulation match. An aquarium is placed in the middle of the ring and filled with living piranha. The loser is the first man to be dumped into the tank. There’s also barbed wire and weapons around so the match is even MORE violent. Matsunaga is dumped into the tank and the fish go to work. He has to be carried out of the arena on a wrestling mat, blood pouring out of his chest.
++ MITSUHIRO MATSUNAGA and GREAT KOJIKA vs. SHOJI NAKAMAKI and SEIJI YAMAKAWA
--Found on History of the Big Japan Death Match
“Circus Barbed Wire Trampoline Scaffold Death Match.” A scaffold is set up in the ring, under which is strand upon strand of unravelled barbed wire. If these guys fall off the scaffold (and you know they will) they’ll hit the barbed wire after a ten foot fall and be impaled. Another unbelievable Japanese stipulation match.
++ MITSUHIRO MATSUNAGA vs. SHOJI NAKAMAKI
--Found on History of the Big Japan Death Match
“Scorpion and Cactus Desert Death Match.” A tank in the middle of the ring is filled with live scorpions, and cactus is placed around the corners of the ring. Matsunaga starts picking out the scorpions and throwing them on Nakamaki and uses the cactus pieces to tear apart his back. You want incredible stipulations, you got it!
++ GREAT POGO vs. GREAT KOJIKA
--Found on History of the Big Japan Death Match
Pogo uses a power drill to tear apart Kojika’s leg, arm and face. He rakes a whirring drill right across the forehead and tears Kojika’s leg wide open. You also will see knives and chains used. Pretty depraved, even by Japanese standards.
++ GREAT POGO, DAIKOKUBO BENKEI, SHADOW WINGER and SHADOW VII vs. JASON THE TERRIBLE, GENNOSUKE KOBAYASHI, LA MASCARA and GREAT KOJIKA
--Found on History of the Big Japan Death Match
Thirteen, yes THIRTEEN stipulation death match. Every thing you can imagine, you’ll see in this match. Circus barbed wire, beds of light bulbs, thermal heaters, baseball bats, knives, cactus,... absolutely INSANE. Billed, rightly so, as the “Ultimate Death Match!”
++ TERRY FUNK and THE SANDMAN vs. CACTUS JACK and SHANE DOUGLAS
--Found on ECW: Deep Impact
The match from the early days of ECW where Funk breaks out the branding iron and burns Cactus with it, before pile driving him onto the whipping flames. You also get all kinds of other nasty stuff, like a tool box opening up and the contents of it banging off Funk’s head as they fall to the ground.
++ TERRY FUNK vs. SABU
--Found on ECW: Deep Impact
“Born to be Wired.” So much barbed wire, they must have invaded the Soviet Union’s supply room. Sabu’s arm is ripped wide open legit by the barbs, and he tapes the wound shut and keeps going. In the end, he and Funk are completely tangled up in the barbed wire and can’t move!
++SABU vs. THE SANDMAN
--Found on ECW: Path of Destruction
“Stairway to Hell” match where barbed wire is hung from the ceiling. The first person to climb a ladder and get to it can then use it as a weapon. Not like these two need barbed wire. Sabu breaks his jaw after his face bounces off the steel guardrail surrounding the ring area. He tapes his jaw shut and continues. The Sandman is completely ripped apart and takes a nasty spill off the ladder and through a table; he is a bloody mess by the end.
++ IAN ROTTEN vs. AXL ROTTEN
--Found of ECW: Path of Destruction
“Taipei Death Match.” The contestants hands are taped up and broken glass is attached to their fists. Blood is everywhere in this one; these guys lose so much blood the match only lasts about five minutes.
++ TOMMY DREAMER vs. BRIAN LEE
--Found on ECW: Hardcore History
“High Incident Scaffold Match.” The ring is completely filled with tables, and there’s a scaffold set up above the ring. The winner is the contestant who pushes his opponent off of the scaffold and through the tables below. A violent match even before the guys hit the scaffold, and Dreamer takes a NASTY blow to the groin.
++ SUPREME vs. THE MESSIAH
--Found on XPW: Go Funk Yourself
A death match featuring the likes of barbed wire, beds of nails, and light bulbs. After the brutal match, Supreme is sent through a table of stacked light bulbs and suffers a broken neck.
++ SUPREME vs. JOHN KRONUS
--Found on XPW: Baptized in Blood
The ropes are removed from the ring and the entire ring is encased in barbed wire. Supreme is sent through the ropes, and the back of his head is caught on the barbs. OUCH!!
++ SUPREME vs. VIC GRIMES
--Found on XPW: Baptized in Blood 2
Features light bulbs, barbed wire, nails... you name it. Supreme climbs up a twenty+ foot ladder which is pushed over, causing him to crash through a table covered in barbed wire. He is ripped wide open, and still manages to stand up and wrestle.
++ SUPREME vs. VIC GRIMES
--Found on XPW: Blown To Hell
“Exploding Ring Match.” Two sides of the ring are wide open, and outside is placed beds of explosives that will blow up whenever a competitor hits them. Grimes suffers severe burns and lacerations on his arm from the explosions.
++ NEW JACK vs. VIC GRIMES
-- Found on XPW: Free Fall
A forty foot tall scaffold is erected, the loser is the guy who is tossed off. These guys are bloodied even before they hit the scaffold. This may be the most extreme match I’ve ever seen. Grimes is tossed from the scaffold, falls forty feet, crashes through a table, bounces off the turnbuckle and ropes, spins around and lands with a thud on the mat, suffering life and career threatening injuries. INSANE!! I don’t believe that they did this.
++ HAYABUSA and MASATO TANAKA vs. TERRY FUNK and Mr. POGO
--Found on FMW: King of the Death Match
“Exploding Ring Double Hell.” Exploding Barbed wire surrounds the ring and at a certain point in the match, the entire ring will be engulfed in a tremendous explosion. Hayabusa is caught in multiple explosions, and is set on fire, while Tanaka is carved open with a steak knife.
++ Mr. POGO vs. MASATO TANAKA
--Found on FMW: Ring of Torture
Pogo uses a chain to choke Tanaka, afterwards he slices his arm apart with a huge knife. Tanaka is utterly destroyed, quite a feat considering how talented a wrestler he is.
++ JASON THE TERRIBLE, HOSAKA, and MATSUNAGA vs. LEATHER FACE, HIDO, and KANEMURA
--Found on FMW: Ring of Torture
Barbed wire surrounds the ring, and Leatherface brings is a board coated to the brim with rusty nails to use as a weapon. Matsunaga has a pane of glass smashed right on his chest, ripping him open severely.
++ MASS TRANSIT and D-VON DUDLEY vs. THE GANGSTAS
--Found on Real Wrestling Injuries
Mass Transit, a seventeen year old who filled in on the ECW card for this show, is brutalized by New Jack. His head is ripped wide open with an exacto knife, and the blood spurts out all over. The injury was so severe that this guy almost died of blood loss, and later tried to sue ECW and New Jack. We get a nice shot of the blood squirting out of Transit’s skull on the fan cam from the show. Utterly disgusting. Perhaps the most blood ever seen in wrestling, and all from this one guy...sick!
++ MANNY FERNANDEZ vs. INVADER #3
--Found on Real Wrestling Injuries
Fernandez performs a move where he stomps Invader’s chest after diving off the top rope. Invader suffers a broken sturnum, which causes him to spew blood from his mouth. This is just disgusting as he vomits blood all over the ring.
++ IAN ROTTEN vs. MAD MAN PONDO
--Found on Real Wrestling Injuries
A match from New Jersey (now Delaware... NJ made them leave because they were just TOO violent) based Combat Zone Wrestling. Pondo grabs a pair of household scissors and slices Rotten’s head with it. His forehead looks like swiss cheese, and the blood really starts to flow. After his arm is also cut with the scissors, Rotten returns the favor onto Pondo, revealing muscle tissue after stabbing Pondo’s arm with the scissors. This is revolting; we get a really sickening shot of the inside of the wound on Pondo’s arm which is enough to make you wanna yack.
++ TERRY FUNK vs. CACTUS JACK
--Found on ECW: The Best of Cactus Jack
Funk carves Jack open with a beer bottle. You see the flesh peel away as the glass rips through Cactus’s skin. Funk then rolls Cactus around in a big pile of fresh garbage...it’s a wonder someone didn’t get blood poisoning.
++ TERRY FUNK and TOMMY DREAMER vs. CACTUS JACK and RAVEN
--Found on ECW: The Best of Cactus Jack
A VCR is destroyed over Funk’s head, and he is choked out with a coaxial cable. LOTS of weapons available in this one to be used, and these guys take full advantage.
