Impertinent Thoughts on Pertinent Subjects XI

The Bottom Line Yadda Yadda Yadda

* Thanks to AudioGalaxy, I have the new Mighty Mighty Bosstones disc (titled A Jacknife to a Swan) two months before it hits stores. It's not quite as good as 2000's Pay Attention was, but it's a more than worthy follow up, with no less than 3 songs that could just absolutely BLOW UP the way The Impression That I Get did in the summer of 1997. And trombonist Christopher Rhodes is showing some SERIOUS horn and vocal chops on this disc.

* So the Rolling Stones are going out on tour again. Well, it took about 3 hours total over 2 Saturdays for all 3 Boston shows to sell out. I must say, I am VERY VERY envious of those people who have tickets to the 2800 seat Orpheum Theatre show. Other than that, I could really care less about the Stones, who last released a decent album, what, 20 years ago?

* Am I the only one who notices that Eminem releases a pop song as his first single with each disc? Not that I don't enjoy it (I love the fact that he says something about using black music to make himself wealthy on the new track), but it's just kind of, I don't know, annoying in some respects. Also annoying is his whining about how his album got leaked on the internet like a month early: quit your whining man, EVERYONE'S album is on the net at LEAST a month early...the Rage Against the Machine/Chris Cornell demos have already been leaked for God sakes.

* Last impertinent thoughts column, he had sold out to Miller Beer. This time, Andrew W.K. is guesting on a Third Eye Blind album. All together now....UGH!!!! Oh, and Fred Durst is also guesting on that album. All together now....DOUBLE UGH!!!!!!!!

* How cute...Britney and Justin are now back together apparently...it's too bad too, because the new Spin has a great little page devoted to "emails" they sent each other as they broke up.

* Speaking of Spin, both they and Rolling Stone have big articles in their current issues about the whole Nirvana court battle. You know, if I thought I could believe a single word out of Courtney Love's mouth, I'd take her side, but I don't, so I can't. Her idea of a single disc greatest hits done right with the new track You Know You're Right, which both camps have said could be the biggest hit of Nirvana's career, yes, even bigger than Teen Spirit. Personally, I want to hear the "rough" Butch Vig mix of Teen Spirit.

* Supposedly, Ja Rule is going to make 2 more albums and then call it quits to concentrate on movies: my thoughts? QUIT NOW YOU UNTALENTED DMX RIPOFF!

* Despite the fact that I think most of Oasis' material sucks, I do find myself agreeing more and more with their guitarist, Noel Gallagher, about the state of rock and roll in America: "American rock music is as bad as it's ever been, really. There's a lot of unshaven grown men in shorts with skateboard trainers singing about the blackness of the future. ... I find it has no soul. They should all have a shave and they should all put on trousers and they should all take their masks off and they should all go and listen to the Beatles and then they should come back and make some proper music." Say what you want, but, for the most part, he's right.

* A seven disc, 142 track (including 49 #1's)1980s box set is being put out by Rhino, with all the tracks in chronological order. This sounds pretty badass for all those people who think 80s music is the best (silly silly people, outside of 7-8 bands, the 80s sucked).

* Am I the only one who thinks Tenacious D makes awesome videos? It's just too bad the video for F*ck Her Gently will never be shown on TV, cause THAT, my friends, was GREAT ART!

* Aside to Jennifer Lopez: stay far far away from Kevin Smith. You don't belong in any of his films. Please feel free to continue making awful music and corrupting bad directors, but don't, just DON'T you dare make a movie with my favorite director.

* #2 on the Billboard Top 200 to canceling your club tour due to a lack of ticket sales...that's the road Tweet just took...I told you people she'd be "tweeting" away soon.

* Why does Papa Roach have any kind of audience? Can someone explain this to me? No, really, please?

* From the "no one cares since it's not 1997 anymore" file, guitarist Nigel Pulsford has left English rockers Bush. At least they gave us Sixteen Stone cause God knows nothing else they've put out is as good...Razorblade Suitcase had it's moments but since then it's been all downhill.

* I know I've mentioned this in various places, but if you really like mid to late 60s rock and roll, be it The Doors, The Beach Boys, or Jimi Hendrix, I cannot recommend the fictional novel "Glimpses" by Lewis Shiner enough. I have about 65 pages left and it's an amazing book about how music can affect our lives. Definitely have to review that soon. :)

* You heard it here first: the Ramones Tribute Album due out this summer, and put together by Rob Zombie, will be the best selling tribute album of all time: the lineup is disgustingly good.

* I meant to cover this in the last installment, but forgot. Michael Greene, the guy who gave the asinine speech at the Grammy awards about digital downloading, resigned a few weeks back. *RANT MODE ON* To quote Dennis Miller, I don't want to get off on a rant here, but there is nothing worse than some pinhead from the RIAA or NARAS getting in front of a microphone and espousing the dangers of digital downloading and what it means to the artists. The truth is, is that it doesn't mean jack sh*te to the artists, unless you're talking about bands like U2, who already have a sweetheart record deal. The artists don't see jack from their record sales, and most times, it's barely enough to pay back the "debts" they "owe" their record companies. Quite frankly, if I was going to support a punk band on a major label, I'd go to their show, buy a t-shirt and have a great time. At least they'll see the money I spent on the ticket and the shirt. F*ck the RIAA and their two-faced, backstabbing nature. They aren't in it for the "artists," they're in it to exploit the artists and make themselves rich in the process. I got three letters for the RIAA: TLC. *RANT MODE OFF*

* Speaking of record labels, there has not been ONE CD/cassette single certified even GOLD for the year 2002 yet. NOT ONE! Now, I know that this format has kind of died out over the last few years, but it shows how ignorant record labels are. People have wised up and have stopped buying albums for just one hit song, and the record labels complain. There's only two solutions: 1) stop putting out god awful albums with one marketable song, OR 2) begin releasing singles regularly.

All right, that's it for this month, but have no fear: Impertinent Thoughts will be back in a few weeks, same bat time, same bat channel.
