Advantages/Disadvantages of Buying Online

It all depends on your personality, what you are buying and what your comfort level is. Please research the company if you choose to buy online.

Thanks for reading and rating Carol!
I have to admit, I still wander through Barnes and Noble from time to time. Plus I'm addicted to Starbucks, but that is another story.

I do very little online shopping.

With stores like Barnes & Noble for instance, I'd rather spend my 3 hours browsing that store full of goodies.

Thanks for the helpful review.

Tony,
Very good points about credit cards. If you don't mind, I'd love to add a little blurb at the bottom of my review to please see your comments. Please let me know if that is acceptable. I doubt I could say it as elequently as you.

As far as the touching, feeling the product part. I agree with you that you very seldom purchase the exact product you handle at the store. That wasn't exactly what I meant, but if I'm unclear, perhaps I should rethink my phrasing. I meant that there are some items I like to try out and see if it will work for me. Sometimes I need to have a hands on experience rather than purchase from a picture. On another note, I suppose you could always go to the store to check out what models you like, and then order it online. I have noticed that many electronics stores have some really great deals.

First, I loved the review, and found it very informative. I have some additional advice for shoppers that you may or may not choose to incorporate.

First, regarding credit card security, while you do have to be careful, you should also make yourself aware of certain facts. For example:

1. If you shop catalogs by telephone with a credit card, you are just as exposed as you are on the internet. Phones are easier to tap than digital systems, and you're sharing your card number with a person that you don't know. I know people who do this all the time, but that won't shop on the internet because of security.

2. Your liability for credit charges made by someone else is limited by law to a maximum of $50, regardless of the card. Some cards (American Express has one specifically for internet users, I think) absorb ALL liability. Be careful, but be informed.

3. Some credit card companies are better than others at mediating disputes with merchants. This goes for offline as well as online purchases, so it's kind of off topic, but relevant nonetheless. I've personally found that Discover is the best. They've come through for me more than once in disputes with vendors.

Second, while I agree that I like to see and touch certain things, electronics especially, before I buy them, when you shop at an electronics store you seldom take home the same unit that you see and touch unless the floor model is the last one in the store, in which case you generally get a substantial discount for taking it. Therefore, there is no real difference between buying from an electronics store, or buying online, as long as you go to the electronics store first to examine the product. Now, if you're shopping online for convenience, this makes no sense, but you can typically get very good discounts on electronics from online retailers than you can from Best Buy or Circuit City (and most of these retailers that offer price guarantees will only compete with other local merchants, not online merchants). I did this with my camcorder. I shopped at brick and mortar establishments, chose the brand and model I wanted, then found it online for such a substantial discount that even with a hefty insured shipping charge, I saved well over $100.

I have to admit, I enjoy a stroll around the mall from time to time too. Plus, they are usually so HUGE, that you can almost call it exercise.

New review from Heidi!

Yay! :)

I like online. You don't have to talk to people. (The older I get, the less I like talking to people. At 90 years old I'll probably be hiding out in caves and not bathing or something. )

Thanks for writing,
Andrea
