Re: Completely agree (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for the nice comments. For me the most compelling film on the Holocaust was Shoah. This documentary transformed the way I view the Holocaust and war in general. For the first time as I watched Shoah, it wasn't dehumanized history. I watched Fateless after seeing Shoah, and I think it definitely helped me understand Fateless and understand the interview of the writer (one of the DVD extras).

Completely agree (Reply to this comment)

I'm one of those people fascinated by the overwhelming strangeness of the Holocaust, so I typically watch most films and documentaries and read many books on the subject--most I have interviewed here.
I agree that Schindler is, in your word, dishonest. The word I used prior to your better description is exploitative. I saw it as an Oscar beg not as a real protrail of the Holocaust. Fateless has a narrow focus and we are left knowing the Jewish characters. Schindler is too broad and we wind up knowing almost none of the Jew's names, let alone their stories.
I had somewhat similar problems with Life Is Beautiful because so much of it was so silly that I just finally didn't care at the end.
Face it, the Holocaust isn't the kind of movie you decide to make lightly or to see lightly. Fateless is almost unique in its balance of horror with introspection and individualization in the face of mass murder and "unpersoning."
Great review.
