SAT 2: It Really Isn't Fatal

The Bottom Line Just make sure you take the right tests that the college requires and take the ones that match your skill level.

I took the SAT 2 in May 2002, and took the Writing, Math 2C and Physics tests. And I got a good score (710, 700 and 670), even better than I had expected. The trick is to choose subjects that are close to what you're taking now. It's best to take certain science courses if you're in AP or at the very least near the end of the year, since these tests are comprehensive. Since I was in AP Physics it would not have been a good idea to choose US History or some other science that wasn't fresh in my mind.

Certain schools, like the schools in the University of California system, require you to take certain subject tests, in this case Writing and Math were the only ones they insisted on as well as one of your choice. The choice for the Math test is up to you, although Math 2C is preferred for those in pre-calc and AP Calculus. Math 1C is for those who are taking lower math. As for the Writing test, don't sweat it. There's an essay section that you will need to answer that counts for 1/3rd of your Writing score. As long as you answer the topic, it really doesn't matter how long it is. It's actually preferable if you keep to the point and not go off on a tangent, since this isn't intended to be a research paper or a long essay. The standard rules for spelling and grammar apply too, but they make some allowances for spelling since you can't have a dictionary in the test room. :) You're given 20 minutes to work on the essay, then you have to move on. The other 2/3rds of the test is multiple choice and mainly tests your knowledge of English grammar. After you're done with that section you can look at your essay again and work on it some more.

You're given an hour for each test, and if you only take one or two tests out of a maximum of three, you can leave early. You also have a five minute bathroom break after the first test (if you're taking Writing, then your first test has to be Writing), and a one-minute stretch break after test 2, so there really isn't any need to stress out. Just take a look at the SAT 2 bulletin at your school's guidance office and see if you can answer the sample questions correctly for the tests you're taking. (The SAT 1 grading applies on the SAT 2 as well, i.e. -1/4th point for incorrect answers and +1 for correct ones) If you can't get a decent score on a certain test you're thinking of taking, then you probably won't do well.

Anyways, good luck and hope you get into a good place somewhere :)
