| liwetz's Full Review: Braun Silk-epil SuperSoft Plus Body System Hair Re... |
I am a pretty hairy woman. I used to be a pretty hairy child. I have very thick, dark hair. I have as much arm hair as half the guys in my company. I hate it! My hair also grows very fast. Many women can go atleast a day with silky smooth legs. Me...I could only wish. My hair is so stubborn that they didn't feel very smooth even right after I stepped out of the shower!
I've learned to deal with having arm hair because I am just too lazy to do anything about it. But everywhere else is a nightmare. About three years ago I got tired of ingrowns and stubble. The hair in my underarms were so horrible that I have 3-4 hairs sprouting out of each folicle/pore (whatever you call it)! I am not exaggerating. The amazon jungle would have sprouted from under my arms if I had let it.
A few years ago, I learned that if you wax (or similarly remove) the hair of your legs, it eventually stops growing back (assuming you don't shave in between). The lady who told me this was waxing my underarms at the time. Do you know how much hair she had on her body? ALMOST NONE! She said that she had been waxing for so long that most of the hair just stopped growing. To prove it to me she showed me her underarms. She had about 2-3 hairs under her arm. They were about 1/4-inch long, proving that she had not recently shaved. I loved that idea! A few months later (after an international vacation in which waxing would have been difficult), I vowed never to shave again. My razor is now gathering dust somewhere in my storage closet.
I started out trying to wax my own legs and underarms but I could never seem to get all the hairs (I have VERY STUBBORN HAIR!). So then I started getting my legs, bikini, underarms, and lip professionally waxed. But forking out a hundred bucks every few weeks was getting old (but the lady did do a GREAT job!). I had to find a more cost effective alternative.
I have tried many different things. Namely waxes. I've tried Nads, Sally Hanson, Nair Hot Wax, and a few others that elude me right now. I have gotten poor to above average results with them. The problem is: COST! I could fork out the money to replenish my wax collection or I could go out an buy something like the Braun Silk-Epil.
So, I bought the Braun (I actually have an older version of the of the one this epinion is supposed to be about). I fully intended on returning it if I didn't like it.
Braun Silk-Epil
I was very excited to try my new Braun Silk-Epil. Waxing was a royal pain-in-the-patootie! The first time I did it I found it quite painful. Many people say that it hurts less than waxing. But I think it hurts more because the Braun is a continuous pain, not just for an instant when you rip the wax off you leg. But, the results were pretty good. My legs did not turn out as clean as when I get my legs professionally waxed. But they were much, much cleaner than when I try to do my waxing myself.
I use the Braun on my legs and my underarms. My underarms have pretty much gotten numbed from using the Braun so I don't really feel pain there anymore. The lower legs are also getting more accustomed to it. But I am still working with the pain in my upper legs since I epilate there infrequently. For my bikini area, I usually wax first (the pain is quick and does not linger) and then I use the Braun to remove the leftovers. If you can stand the pain of using the Braun in your bikini area, you'll suffer for a while. But then you'll have a nice, smooth v-shape with less ingrowns and irritation (NOTE, it will probably be irritated immediately after using, but give it a day and you'll have a beautiful bikini line) throughout the week.
Since I have not shaved in almost 3 years, my hair has grown more sparse (I would say that about 10% of my original hair still grows). My hair is also finer. Not quite baby-fine, but much finer than it used to be. I hope that in another year or two I will have rid my legs and underarms of hair altogether. I can't wait for that day!
