You don't have to switch out the sim card but depending on carrier it could get pretty expensive. Then there the problem that you might be buying a phone that locked. That means you can only use the phone on that carrier. Example is Fido in Canada. If its unlocked it will cost more for the phone but your not limited as too what carrier you want to go to for service. Lastly you can also use prepaid only if the phone is unlocked. Say UK because remember very expensive bill if its your own sim.

Phone that Says IT ALL (Reply to this comment)

This is one phone you people out there must have. I'm what you call a cell phone freak and this is the Perfect Phone for the Perfect You. I shouldn't have to describe too much about this phone. It is the first world phone that is on the top of the food chain. Everywhere I go everybody comments on this phone. They ask how much and I tell them what its worth. My girlfriend was so happy with the phone she couldn't stop sleeping without holding on too it. Well, enough about my happiness.
This phone has great reception. I've been doing some traveling to Hong Kong, France, and Greece and I get great reception. I never had a problem with not being able to use my phone. If I miss a call there's always sms messaging. Battery life is standard. The longest its ever lasted is eight days. Talk time is 3 to 4 hours. Voice dialing is very handy when I'm driving. Menu navigation is quick and easy too use. This phone is extremely light. The weight is equivalent too a bottle of cologne. This phone casing is metal casing. Its finish is nice and smooth. Great back light so even in the dark you can use this phone.
Now for the downside too this phone. I do agree it is expensive. I won't say if I'm rich or poor but the saying goes, what you pay is what you get. Remember this is Nokia were talking about. The phone feels slippery so some people might actually drop it. The keypad is kind of small. I wish you were able to have more voice dialing instead of just 8. Other then that the phones fine. I probably didn't mention this but there is custom ring tones that you can download or send via IR. You only get five but you can change it anytime. If you want this phone then go for it. You surely won't be disappointed. I know I'm not. Because of this phone five more of my other friends went to switch carriers to voicestream just to use this phone. They all travel too so they are very happy with what it can do. If you want buy this as a gift especially for the women. They will be very happy that you didn't get them some cheap plastic toy phone.

Global use question (Reply to this comment)
by uraniumorchids
Do you have to switch out the chip in order to use this phone in Europe, as you must do with several of the Ericsson global phones? And if so, what is that process like?
