Besides a lot of others that I agree with, I especially appreciated you mentioning Grosse Point Blank, which is also on my top list. However, most people grossely ignored it when it came out and I feel it has been lost in the multitude...

Re: my comments (Reply to this comment)
by Simply_Crispy
Usually, I wouldn't even bother replying to cretinous comments like this, but seeing as it's quite possibly one of the stupidest, most patronising pieces of crap I've read in this site, I'd like to point a few things out:
1) I am very much aware that The Blair Witch is a fictional film. Hell, I don't remember saying otherwise. Are you in any way aware that the term 'drama-documentary' is the term used for a piece of drama (i.e. A FILM!) shot in the style of a documentary, which pretty much sums The Blair Witch up perfectly. The reason I like it, and rate it as high as I do is because - hold the phone! - I think it's totally brilliant. Pure and simple. For the record, if you're going to attempt to speak down to someone with comments like this, please, please PLEASE ensure that you have an IQ bigger than your shoe size.
2) Snatch is at 84, not 'way back around 90'. Let's clear that up. Secondly, to rate a film as, in my view (AND ONLY MY VIEW) the 84th best ever to be created is not, repeat not 'an insult'. Let me spell it out for you: putting it here in my list means that I like it, and agree that it's a great movie. Is it really that hard to understand?
3) Jaws as number 1. This, again, is easy to explain. It's my favourite ever film. This is a list, wherein I name my favourite ever film. Hence, Jaws gets the number one slot. Is it so hard to understand that this top 100 list is not what I, nor anyone else, would class as definitive, nor an accurate representation on the best films ever released. It is simply a rundown of my favourite films. Mine, not anyone elses. MINE. Could I care less whether or not someone thinks my choices are 'retarded'? No. Do I really care whether or not someone thinks my choices are wrong? No. Do I even give a flying monkey's whether people think I omitted their personal favourites? NO. And why? Because, children, this is not anyone else's Top 100 list. It's mine.
I truly, honestly, deeply can't understand why some people are taking offence to this list, nor can I understand why they are commenting on my lack of taste. Your condescending remarks are futile, except in that if I receive anymore ill-informed and downright unwanted comments like this, the whole editorial will just be deleted.
So thanks for the groundbreaking insight on this one, now run along, your bus is leaving.
Chris

I enjoyed reading such a long, well crafted review... and it made me think. Something epinions doesn't do for me that much anymore.
Anyway... Chasing Amy is my least favorite movie on your list. #5? and the blare witch project??? and you think snatch is better than lock stock? Lock, stock would probably be my 2nd favorite movie of all time... and snatch would be down around 90 or so.
glad i got that out of the way :)
great work... and thanks for a great review.

1. Yes, I have a job, which explains why this list took over two weeks to compile.
2. Sorry, but that's the way it goes. I happen to love it, others like yourself do not. I never said my choices would be popular
3. Much appreciated.

1. Do you have a job? Or just retired?
2. After reading your review I am even more certain that film is completely subjective. Blair Witch? Come on. Blair witch is about as scary as a documentary made by Ronald McDonald.
3. It is your opinion, and that was mine. Good day.

LOL It's not that bad a list is it? What can I say, I was brought up in a small shanty village and all that Blockbusters ever had were these mainstream flicks. If it wasn't for my dad forcing me to watch the likes of Babette's Feast and Psycho when I was 5 I'd probably never have had any foreign or 'arthouse' films in there.
Sorry to subject your computer to such a barrage of abuse.

Your list has got me yelling expletives at my mother's computer. Are you sure you're not my boss in disguise? (I work in a video shop, by the way.)
Still, well thought out, very ambitious - I would never dream of tackling the 'top 100' subject - even if there are too many modern films here, too much Hollywood (and a disproportionate number of thrillers... but, hey, I guess you like thrillers).

On Being Off Topic (Reply to this comment)
by d_fienberg
I posted something like this on my own top 20 films of the 1990s post which was also deemed off topic. (http://www.epinions.com/content_2700714116 if you're keeping score at home)
By the letter of the law, this 100 Best list (and my only slightly shorter films of the 90s list) is off topic. However, the spirit of the law doesn't really apply here. The spirit of the law is that reviews should stay where they belong. Period. This review (and my review) are where they belong. They're where they belong because even though, heaven forbid, they give *more* information than is required and they are *more* helpful than was required.
It's not like Simply Crispy (or Chris) or I were trying to get away with cheating in our posts. We attempted to do something ambitious. As many of Chris's films on this list that I disagree with, the list is massively helpful. You think somebody going to this topic and seeing 100 films listed rather than 10 is going to get frustrated, complain, and quit visiting Epinions? Exactly the opposite. Ambitious projects like this encourage people to read more. It's just that simple. And for ambitious projects to be penalized when the problem lies with the site seems flawed.

Re: Re: Re: Sorry. (Reply to this comment)

"The fact is Epinions is right, as most agree, in wanting a topic to mean a topic." Most agree? So you'd say one person out of 63 rating this as off-topic as the majority would you? 62 other members have not got a problem with this, nor do they see it as being 'off-topic'.
I don't want this to get into a war of words, simply because it's not something worth falling out over, and as you say we're both entitled to our own opinions. What I do object to are condescending remarks like "mine is worth yours and maybe an extra two cents". Please don't talk down to me like that, I'm not a simple-minded child, so I'd appreciate you omitting such patronising remarks in the future.
As far as I'm concerned, this is something we're going to have to agree to disagree on. I still cannot understand your stance, and would even go as far as saying you're being way too despotic about this. I am not going to discuss this further, purely because I have massive respect for you and I don't want this to turn into a slanging match.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by.

Dear Simply Crispy: You have a right to your opinion, and mine is worth yours and maybe an extra two cents.
The fact is Epinions is right, as most agree, in wanting a topic to mean a topic. I urge you to join me in asking for a Top 100 Movie List, just as soon as the mechanism for creating such a site is in place.
Respectively.

Hmm...
I think that he is probably receiving a lot of flack because other people have been posting top ten, bottom ten, whatever else in these top ten slots and lots of people are rating them highly rather than rating them off topic.
Personally I don't mind people posting other stuff in addition to the top ten as long as the top ten is included in the list...

macresarf1. While I respect your decision as a lead, I have to say, you're talking complete bollocks. Does that list, or does this list not, contain my ten favourite films of all time? Go on, look, you'll see that it does.
Basically, what your comment says is that you frown on innovation. Yeah, I've decided to expand the criteria a bit, but does that really mean I've veered off-topic? No, and I'm afraid you're in the minority of one here if you think otherwise. I don't know why you feel the need to take your role as 'lead' so seriously, particularly when Psychovant seems to have had no problems with this posting. Yeah, I'm sure they're 'beating you round the head', but that doesn't mean you have to be so despotic. Lighten up, for God's sake, it's just a bit of fun.
I do respect you macresarf1, I genuinely do, but I'd be airing these thoughts whether it was my editorial or someone else's. I cannot agree with your rating in any way, shape or form.

Dear Simply Crispy: I am impressed with your energy here, but the site is "The 10 Best Movies Ever" (not The 100 Best Movies Ever). I know that you may feel that picky, but we have a lot of trouble with site drift, or whatever you want to call it, and I have been hit over the head recently about being a good model . . . and so I must part company, for what it's worth, with my esteemed colleague to call this review Off Topic.
The real problem is that we should have a 100 Best Site. (We had Pro 100 Best Sites not so long ago.) Get in touch with me when Movies finally gets its Suggest-a-Product, like a lot of the other categories, an we'll put a 100 Best up, and you can move this piece over.

All the best.

Jude, I thought I had too much time on my hands LOL. Anyways, thanks for the in-depth critique. I was going to offer my own kind of percentage breakdown of genre's and suchlike, but by the time I'd finished this list I was sick to death of writing about it.
Now, about that U2 thing. You're quite right, there isn't a version that exists with Snakes in it. Pff, you'd think I'd have at least made the slightest bit of effort wouldn't you, but oh no, how wrong I was LOL.

100 more! Now!
OK. NOT FUNNY. Thank you for making this “100" instead of “107" or “113". It is much easier to work this as percentages! You may not care but what the f...First of all, I enjoyed your run-down and appreciate it for the Herculean task it must have been! I doubt if I would have come up with all of them, although I respect your choices. Having seen about 600 movies in the last year, and every year since VCR’s were invented, I would have to do some serious thinking to even START a list. So hats off (literally) to your remarkable effort!
1. Of all 100, I find I am in COMPLETE agreement on 41 % of the films you listed!
I was going to list them, but I changed my mind. That would be more work for you to cross reference..and a little too obsessive even for me!(I did do this in the lost version)
2. I have never seen 29% (Where have I BEEN?)
3. I can see your point on 19% of them, although they may not have made my list, assuming I would or could do such a thing!
4. I vehemently disagree on only 12. (I Will list them since it is the short list.)...# 14, 19, 26, 38, 41, 49, 50, 59, 73, 74, 87. I would rather be buried in an anthill and left for dead than see another Austin Powers Movie . I am allergic to Stanley Kubrick in all its manifestations.
That means of the 71 movies I have seen I agree completely on 67% of those, I don’t know about you, but I thought that was cool.
I love the mini-run down and critiques, all of them spot-on.,
--Two questions though (maybe more) I couldn’t find anything about U2 in the IMDB about SNAKES, (#92) The title is just 'Rattle and Hum 'I believe. Have you seen an uncut version about snakes?
--About Jim Carrey. Are you forgetting his key role in Eastwood’s The Dead Pool (1988) ? OK it was a minor role. I was exaggerating. Or his unforgettable performance as a Dumb Alien in Earth Girls are Easy(1989)? Or my favorite, The Mask!(1994). Oh. Serious role. Never mind.
I applaud your effort, and yes I was very impressed by your courage, always...and writing ..as always!
Stay well,
Jude
