Started out on an double air mattress in college, could not stand the dorms tiny lumpy mattress. They would not allow you to switch the assigned to the room mattress out. So my dad threw the "assigned" mattress in the space over the closet, threw a cut sheet of plywood on springs, a rug gripper sheet, a double air mattress, a good full sided pillow-top cover, sheets and viola. I was in heaven for 4 school years, everyone else wanted one after they tried it out. A couple kids found the bucks, about $100 to do the same.
Have carried a twin size with me on the road for years and many moves, hotels even make it up for you. Met my husband at a festival with it and converted my new husband, with a King size!
This year he did the same for his daughter....what comes around goes around.

A few snags I've found With This (Reply to this comment)
by msbinky
I tried this with several different 'brands' of air mattresses and found there to be a great variance in the sizes of them. Although they SAY they are, for instance, 54" wide, they will actually BE 53" or even 52.5" when inflated. The variance in length in even more problematic! Especially with a waterbed frame!. If the mattress comes up just the smallest bit too short, then every morning the mattress is over the end of the frame and sticking up in the air! I tried at least 8 different mattresses, all brand names, and not one fit correctly into the frame of my waterbed. I am now back to a waveless mattress.

This was the only source I found online regarding how to optimally utilize air mattresses.
I use one because I'm tired of schlepping around heavy things every time I have to move.
My size full air mattress folds up to fit in a stuff sack and weighs less than a typical bag of groceries!

Our king sized waterbed sprung a leak this morning on one side. Its a soft-side so the so-called frame and top are still intact. I'm going to purchase a single air mattress tomorrow to replace the side we hauled out. That should give us enough time to decide what we need instead of rushing out in a panic and making a very expensive mistake. Who knows, we may end up with both sides replaced with air.

to epinions. It looks like you are pretty new here, but what a great title! And I am very impressed with what it sounds like you and your husband were able to do for very little money. I was sure you were going to suggest something very expensive.
I had waterbeds for years too, but haven't found a good substitution yet, as I can't afford to spend a lot of money.

In answer to your question about having to use the waterbed frame:
I do know that an ordinary air mattress is designed to work fine without any side supports, since it is actually intended for use as a guest bed on the floor, if necessary. However, one of the reasons I think the combination of things my husband and I ended up with works so well is because the waterbed frame surrounds the air mattress and supports it from all four sides. This way, when you put your weight on it, it does not bulge out sideways... it conforms to YOU where you lay... just like a watermattress does. This was such an accidental discovery! We couldn't afford an expensive new mattress, and didn't want to fool with water anymore, so in our cheapness mode, we stumbled upon this solution. I can hardly believe how comfortable it is.
I HAVE used an air mattress when visiting a friend who has a very uncomfortable fold out bed that we have to use there. I put the inflated air mattress on top of the little thin sofabed mattress and it works very well.
But...there IS something extra comfy about the way it holds up inside the waterbed frame, though!

Thanks for sharing this with us. I would have never thought about doing this. Sounds like a very inexpensive way of comfort.
Do you think this would only work in a waterbed type frame or on top of boxsprings also?
