The Bottom Line A voice like this must be experienced in person.
In the 80's was Pat Benetar....today it's Alanis!!! Love her music, but nothing does her justice until she's experienced LIVE IN PERSON. Date: June 4, 2002 Place: Oakdale Theatre, Wallingford, CT Warm-up Band: RIS - a wonderful woman singer similar in style to Alanis with a little Erika Baydu & Indiaire mixed in. Seats: Dead center, 19 rows back (smaller theatre). Got them on the 'net 3 days before the show & lucked out because they had just been released that day. The warm-up band occupied the row in front of me & I suspect had reserved my row as well. $45.00 each Show-time: 7:30pm whereby the warm-up band was prompt (about 7:37pm)and played through until 8:40ish - ending their set with a suprising rendition of "Back in Black" from her favorite band AC/DC. It was interesting and enjoyable (being a former AC/DC fan). Alanis started promptly at 9:00pm and ended a disappointing 1 1/4 hours later(which included a 10-minute encore). Music: A mix of old and new. Given that this is her "SWEPT" tour, I thought emphasis would be primarily on the new stuff especially in light of the short stage-time. She mixed her "Jagged Little Pill" oldies of: Right Through You Perfect Head Over Feet Hand In My Pocket You Learn (one of the encore songs) and a JAMMING You Oughta Know with her "Under Rug Swept" goodies: 21 Things I Want In A Lover (which was played third(after two songs from her second album that were not as dynamic) and I felt should have been played first to really grab the audience and sweep them off their feet. Hands Clean So Unsexy Precious Illusions That Particular Time(her first encore song) A Man PERFORMANCE ***************** Alanis Morrissette is not so much a performer in the likes of Madonna or JLO (thankfully). She could be viewed as a "boring" performer in that she does not dance, have intricate stage props, story plots, or even back-up singers or dancers. All is bare bones in that department. In fact, for most of the songs she paces from the left to the right sides of the stage. In order to see her face, you have to look at the overhead monitor screens. She got a little crazy(in the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Living Color(remember them?) fashion of swinging her long mop around frantically). She does not relate to the audience except to humbly say they were the "greatest" and to thank them. There were also very few prefaces to songs. The only one I recall off-hand is the dedicate "A Man" to the men in the audience. The glitsy-ist thing on stage is her glitter-encrusted guitar. She had her hair strung straight down in it's usual style, glitter on the brow-bones(!), a black sleeveless shirt (showing off her newly-sculpted arms) with a little glittery insignia on the front, black jeans and black shoes/sneakers. Blah. THE MEAT ************** But...to move on to the more important issues, let's talk about the voice. Oh...the clarity and range of that angelic voice. Crisp, clear and NEVER overpowered by the music. She has a tendency to yodel at times on her CD's - but only a slight detection on maybe two occasion occurred. Instead, a building up of a smooth crescendo was to be experienced by all. Her ballads were flawless. She is probably the first performer that I enjoyed measurably more in person than on CD. In fact, my husband accompanied me to this concert reluctantly. Why? Because he was turned-off to her music and style to the point of not really listening to her music on CDs.(Maybe that was a plus since she is viwed as a male-basher by many). But...he was amazed at her "unbelievable talent and great voice" BOTTOM LINE **************** A GREAT VOICE which must be experienced in person. It would have been thrilling and a more complete experience if she gave a little history/background to most of her songs. I understand much of her material is from painful experiences that she may not want to share, but just what I saw of her on VH1 and understanding where the inspiration for the song "Perfect" comes from makes you appreciate her artistry all the more. ALANIS ROCKS!! |
