About Me: Check out my Outside Sales bestselling book Outside Sales Badass on Amazon.

Interesting concept, forced comedy, but a fun watch all in all

Pros:entertaining, hilarious moments
Cons:forced comedy, Sarah Jessica Parker is horrible.. weak plot development
The Bottom Line: The movie overall was fairly funny, althought the comedy was a bit forced. Sarah Jessica Parker pretty much kills the movie with her sad performance.

I recently watched Failure to Launch after I saw it on sale at Wal-Mart for like $7.99. I figured a brand new movie at a price that good, was something worth scooping up. After all I had wanted to see the movie for quite some time anyway, so it was a win for me all around.

I watched the movie for the first time with a group of 3 friends, all of which were big fans of stupid comedies, and I was hoping that this one wouldn't disappoint. Some of our favorite movies to watch as a group have included Zoolander, Benchwarmers, Wedding Crashers, and of course Van Wilder.

The Plot
In order to keep from ruining the movie, I will give only minimal information about the movie in order to preserve it's integrity, as I always do. If you are looking for a more in depth review that covers every aspect of the movie, so that you can live vicariously through the reviewer, this is not your review... so move along little donkey... but if you want just enough to make an informed decision... please carry on...

Essentially, the movie revolves completely around Matthew McConaughey, who is a thirty something that just can't seem to move out of his parent's house. His parents have tried everything from walking around naked, to having sex all around the house, but nothing seems to get him to leave home.

Finally, they meet up with Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays an interventionist. As an interventionist, she is a professional dater, who creates a 'chance' encounter, gets the man to ask her out, and then does whatever she can to make him move out of the house. The problem is that she quickly becomes very involved in the relationship and her personal feelings are beginning to interfere with her work.

The Comedy
Throughout the movie, there are random bits of comedy that are thrown in to back up a seemingly unplanned plot line. Rather than placing the comedy in the general plot itself, a lot of bad things seem to happen just out of chance when the guys are all hanging out together. These scenarios are hilarious, but completely outside of the scope of the movie itself. It is quite obvious these were forced attempts to help boost a failing story line. So rather than revamping the story to be more entertaining, the writers obviously bailed on it, figuring they could recapture the audience with random moments of hilarity.

Another side part of the entire story, is an insane mockingbird that is driving Parker's monotone roommate crazy. So, it's a pretty hilarious thing to watch how the mockingbird issue is resolved.

The Acting
While I think that Sarah Jessica Parker is as worthless in this movie as she is in all of her acting jobs, the rest of the cast holds up the movie extremely well. Matthew McConaughey, who I generally don't enjoy watching has a great performance and seems very natural in this part. He was definitely the right choice for the role and makes it POP. It's just unfortunate that his counterpart wasn't able to add a lending hand. Often times you will find yourself bored by Parker's performance and you'll doubt the authenticity of the relationship because of that. When I go to see a movie of this nature, I want to be sold on the relationship, I want it to have the appearance 'as if' it were reality. But the pair seemed quite awkward together, however Matthew McConaughey seemed to make it work regardless, while Parker could not. I guess that goes to show, that some people are better meant selling french friends and extra cheese.

The other actors play a hilarious supporting role. They all seem very comfortable in their roles and play an important part in the development of the movie's plot. All of the characters are extremely believable and make the movie hilarious to watch at points.

Final Thoughts
This is a great movie to watch if you just want something different. But if you really want to be impressed by something, it's not going to do it. The movie provides some huge laughs at times, but for the most part, the plot, and Parker's poor acting abilites can take away from it. The concept is great and could be quite hilarious if taken advantage of... unfortunately too many opportunities are missed and the comedy ends up being more forced, than natural.

Still, regardless of the bad, I highly recommend the movie for something different to watch.
