Jammin' To That Crack Rock Steady Beat
Jun 18 '02
The Bottom Line "Damn fools, don't they know there's no such thing as leftover crack?"
"Word."
I would just like to state that technically, I didn't see Choking Victim live; I saw Leftover Crack. But it's pretty much the same band, so no harm shall be done. To those who aren't "in the know", Choking Victim disbanded and reformed as Leftover Crack.
I recently got into Leftover Crack/Choking Victim, from a recommendation of an online friend. He said, "if you like Against All Authority, you'll love Choking Victim. They're almost identical to AAA, only more satanic." Well, if that's not a selling factor, I don't know what is!
So, on a whim, I downloaded a handful of Choking Victim and Leftover Crack mp3s, and I was instantly hooked.
And so, a few months go by, and I buy some albums, blah blah blah. And then... I hear the magic words from my concert information connection:
"Leftover Crack is playing in Toronto."
That was what I needed to hear. In a several-month drought of no good shows, it was the breath of fresh air (or crack fumes, I suppose) that I needed.
So it's the day of the show, at the Kathedral, one of Toronto's finest venues. It houses about 500-800 people. Leftover Crack had a turnout of at least 800 people. The place was packed. So after two relatively good bands, Thugs and The Heatstokes, Leftover Crack finally took the stage. Well, it was obvious that they were completely bombed out of their mind, on who knows what.
So the crowd goes bonkers and they open with "The Good, Bad, And Leftover Crack", a fast, western-style song about what LoC know about best; killing cops, burning churches and smoking crack. After that, their bass amp screws up, and the bassist, in a fit of intoxicated frustration, throws his bass guitar on the floor and storms off the stage. The first thing that went through my head was "aw f*ck", because the last time they played Toronto, the drummer quit in the middle of their set. Luckily, the bassist came back, and they continued.
One thing I like about Leftover Crack is that they don't forget and dismiss their history. Along with such LoC favourites such as Atheist Anthem, Nazi White Trash, Stop The Insanity, Rock The 40oz, Muppet Namblin', and Gay Rude Boys Unite, they played a plethora of Choking Victim classics, such as Crack Rock Steady (nothing better than satanic reggae), Infested, and 500 Channels.
As a final thought of the highlight of the evening, I'd have to say there was two. The first is when they pulled out the paper-mache Jesus and threw it into the crowd. I managed to grab it and rip it's head off, and I threw it back on stage. Then they stuck it on the microphone stand and set it on fire. Secondly is when Stza, the singer, stage-dived during the encore of Stop The Insanity and landed right on top of me. That dude's got some serious BO problems; but what can you expect from a crack-addicted squatter from New York?
