Eagles Summer Tour 2002

The Bottom Line Back and sounding better than ever. Walsh steals the show!

The Eagles soar- like never before, this after their first North American tour in seven years. They opened on May 31 in Reno, Nevada to a sold out crowd of 11,000. I saw them in St. Paul this past Wednesday (June 19,2002) to a sold out crowd of 17,700. They still have several cities on their venue, so if you want to see the concert of a lifetime I strongly advise checking your ticketmaster to see if they are coming to a city near you.

Prices will vary depending upon where they are playing. For example, they played in Fargo, ND the night before coming to St. Paul, MN and the highest priced ticket was $75, while here the highest was $136.50 (yikes), but that is what I paid, because I thought-- if I'm going to go see somebody that I really, really like, I really, really want to see then, and see them I did.

After a three-hour 30-song marathon they put on, I'm here to tell you they still got it going on. I went there wanting to be Mrs. Don Henley, but by the time the evening ended I was cozying up to Joe Walsh wailing on his guitar, reminiscent of his old James Gang days. Henley's vocals have never sounded better, especially in hitting the high notes on "One of These Nights."

By the middle of the second set Joe Walsh had us on our feet for good this time with "Walk Away" and "Funk #49" from his James Gang days. For some 50-something guys, they may have showed their age by their looks, but certainly not by their voices, guitars jamming, or their energy.

Don Felder, who was once a long-time guitarist with the group had a nasty split with the Eagles last year over money (of course) but that didn't take anything away from guitarist Stuert Smith. Accompanying the group included a horn section with two keyboard players, and let's not forget the tenor and alto saxophone. Smith and Walsh went toe to toe while jamming on "Life's Been Good." I was grooving to the music big time while standing next to my seat on the main floor, 7th row no less.

I read the knockout review in both of our city newspapers the next day, where it was mentioned that our governor, Jesse Ventura was there even. Yep, he's a rocker from way back then. But, I even had one up on the ole' governor, sitting two rows in front of him.

I tell you, it was a site to behold-- the audience of nearly 50-something's rocking and rolling with those sweet-sounding Eagles up on stage. They played the best of their oldies, reminiscent of a 30-year class reunion, which marked the Eagles 30-year reunion, but of course they have had solo careers the last 20 of those years.

If you are an Eagles lover you won't be disappointed by walking down memory lane with them. I'm still humming "I Can't Tell You Why."
