My Ghost Hunting Experience

The Bottom Line Based on a True Story

I go to school at a High School in Northern Minnesota. Life is pretty easy and quiet up here, and the people are friendly, and even a little odd at times, myself included. But hey, it's a good life.

My school's theatre has a ghost story attatched along with it. The ghost in question stems from an actual teacher, but there's always been a bit of skeptisism attatched to believing such a story. However, I've corrobrated the following story with his now-grown students, teachers, and administrators. Here's the run-down:

Robert Canfield was an English teacher. As he was also the director for the theatre program in the 70's, he taught in a room that was connected to our theatre through a backstage doorway.

The weather here can get pretty freaky (70's one day, blizzard the next), so on the bad evenings, he would spend the night in a small dressing room that was attached to his room, to avoid the commute across town (Duluth is a city which is stretched out in a line, rather than sprawling from a central point). He was very attatched to his job, to the school, and to the Theatre program in general. He was writing a play known as "The Trumpet," as a testament to his dedication (There is even a drama award in his name).

He died unexpectedly of a heart attack. "The Trumpet" remains unperformed.

Any "strange" occurences that happen have been attributed to the fact that no one has ever performed "The Trumpet" (I have no idea why; maybe because the legend is generally not-believed, or maybe the play is just really, really bad [I've never read it]). Here's some that I've witnessed: All stage lights cutting out except for the red ones (even though the gels and lenses sometimes aren't placed in a pattern), curtains flapping without an air current, lights turning on by themselves (which will only turn on when you throw a breaker switch), and a general "I'm not alone" feeling every once in awhile.

So I set a date and got together my equipment. I was ready to start a bonified ghost-hunt, with most of the equipment. I preceeded the hunt with a couple months of research in my spare time on supernatural science and methods. My equipment was as followed:

Notebook, Pen, Flashlight
Sony DCR-TRV330 Digital8 Camcorder
Camcorder-mounted Halogen light w/ Infrared Lamp (100-ft. Range)
Camcorder-mounted Gun-Microphone
Camera/Camcorder Tripod
Thick Towels
Canon Powershot A20 Digital Camera w/ 64MB CompactFlash Card
Microcassette Recorder w/ Tape

My objective in the hunt was to find flying "orbs," supposedly flying balls of "spiritual energy"... but I won't get into the nitty gritty details.

I thoroughly cleaned all lenses and filters on each piece of equipment. I used the towels and the tape to block out every source of light in the theatre, and I mean every source. By the time I shut off the lights, there was zero luminescence, and I had to use the camcorder's infrared to navigate my way around. I set up the camera in the balcony, bathing the entire theatre in infrared light, and left it sit for the hour I was alloted to use the theatre.

Using the flashlight to find my way to the stage, I took the microcassette recorder out to perform Electronic Voice Phenomina (EVP) tests. Supposedly, you ask questions, and "voices from beyond" will answer when you later listen to the tape on full blast. I had heard some other hunting groups' findings in this area, and it's very eerie.

After completing the test, I placed the recorder on a seat, kept it running, and sat in the center of the theatre.

And just sat there.

Unless YOU'VE done it, you can't really understand how eerie it is in complete darkness in an old theatre. Alone.

After about a half-hour, I took various digital pictures at pre-determined angles in the theatre.

Then I waited until the hour was over, and packed up.

----------------------------------------------------------

The EVP recordings revealed nothing out of the ordinary. However...

...I had to sift through the false evidence in my digital pictures. Digital cameras are notorious for creating bubbles in very dark images, which a less in-touch person in my case would immediately identify them as ghosts, especially when they have a green or red aura. I did, however, find a very opaque white dot in one of my pictures with a blue trail behind it, the trail fading the father away from the dot it got. I'm not kidding you.

The video was even more strange.

When sealed, the theatre has no air current. The infrared could see things as clear as day in the theatre, so I could see when I was using the flashlight, which was very, very minimally. There were three seperate "occurences," which all happened while I was sitting in the center of the theatre, flashlight off and closely guarded by me:

Every once in awhile, a luminescent ball would zoom into the frame from above, swirl, dip down, and then zoom back up towards the ceiling and out of the frame. That happened three times.

I'm still trying to figure out a logical explanation of that. Honestly, you have to see it to believe it. My school's newspaper snatched up this story after seeing the video. The freshmen are afraid to go into the theatre. My nickname changed from the butt-man (long story, like this one) to the ghost-guy.

But most of all, it has sparked a serious amount of controversy with others and within myself as to what exactly happened...

...maybe I did spend an hour alone with a ghost.
