The Crusade For Children is a local charity event in Louisville, Kentucky. When I recently saw the televised event I decided to write an article about it.
The Crusade For Children is sponsored by a local television station, WHAS, and has raised over $90 million since it began in 1954. The money raised is used for the care and treatment of handicapped children in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. For the most part the money is used to purchase items for hospitals and clinics that take care of these children. However, it is also used to hire professionals who can help children who are handicapped or to purchase personal items that a child may need such as wheelchairs or walkers. Every penny raised is used for the children.
The first weekend in June the Crusade has a 2 day television broadcast on WHAS11. The broadcast continues until the final total for the donations are in. But the broadcast is only the finale. Before the broadcast there are volunteers and people donating which makes the whole thing possible.
I am sure you are curious how it is possible for every penny donated to be used for the children when the crusade is so large that it must have expenses. First of all the workers are all volunteers, giving their time and energy freely. Second is donations of services such as television air time and bank accounts which allow the Crusade to earn large amounts of interest on the money while paying nothing to use the bank's services.
The way the money goes to work for the children is through various non-profit agencies that request items. Then the Crusade gives the money for that item or for hiring a professional to help a child. In this way the Crusade is able to make sure that each agency is using the funds for the appropriate items.
This charity is fueled by it's huge volunteer base. Several local clubs and businesses volunteer. All local fire departments also join in the work. In addition there are individuals who choose to volunteer. The boy scouts and girl scouts are a huge volunteer base. There are many groups that collect money throughout the year to give to the crusade, most of them taking a percentage of membership dues and putting them aside for the Crusade. Collections go on all year long and then there is a huge effort during the first week of June to get as much together as possible for the big show.
The Crusade is a fun way to collect for a worthy cause. When the children get to drop a few dimes into the buckets at the road block they get very excited. But the most exciting part for my children is when the fire engine stops, with it's siren on, in front of the house to collect some money. Sometimes they even let children ride on the fire truck as they go around the block.
Just spare change from people stopping at the road blocks can add up to a lot of help for these children. When the triplets were born they spent two months in an NICU that was paid for by the Crusade. If it weren't for the hard work of all the volunteers and the generosity of donations my precious babies might not be here today. With every penny I donate I am thankful for all the Crusade has done and continues to do. So if you live in Kentucky or Southern Indiana remember that every penny adds up and your donations are appreciated.
