Bang For The Buck
Pros:excellent scripting, great performance by Carrey
Cons:not enough time to truly show how funny this concept really could have been.
The Bottom Line: An excellent movie concept turned into an excellent movie, pulled on heavily by the hilarios performance by Jim Carrey.
Not sure why I put off seeing this movie, even though I am a big fan of the work of Jim Carrey. So far there has yet to be a movie of his that hasn't been absolutely hilarious at the time that he put it out. His characters have always been so ridiculous, yet believable that they stick with you, and leave you begging for more, wondering what else he can create.
I actually got to see this movie for the first time on DVD. My childcare provider, who was a single parent herself, had invited me over for dinner, and I brought along some movies for us to watch, which included Jarhead, and Fun with Dick and Jane. Because by the end of dinner we were laughing so much, we decided it would be best to keep the theme going, with a comedy. It just made sense to do it that way, so we put Jarhead off for another time.
The Movie
Fun with Dick and Jane is based around a 1977 release of the same basic movie, but with some major comedic changes to make this movie more original than most movies based on previous releases.
The movie is based completely around the life of Dick and Jane Harper (Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni). Dick has a high paced job and everything is looking way up for him. When he is promoted, he thinks that his world is looking far brighter than it ever has before. He talks to his wife, Jane and they decide that Jane who hates her job anyway should leave it, only to stay at home and take care of their child. They also decide to make some major purchases, including the installation of a new swimming pool, new landscaping, etc.
Unfortunately for Dick on his way to work he realizes that something is completely different than he thought. When he walks in to work that morning, everyone is shredding documentation, and he soon realizes that he is about to become the media fall guy for the bad financial moves of the company, which would ultimately put it out of business, put it under public scrutiny, and destroy the jobs of everyone involved. The worst part is that on top of everyone losing their jobs, their pensions were lost as well, so there wasn't anything to go around.
Dick figured it wouldn't be all that hard to find a new job because of his experience, but when he realized that there were hundreds of other blue collar workers vying for the few jobs available, it was damn near impossible to find anything worthwhile.
Slowly Dick and Jane find themselves to sell off their possessions, resort to crime, and ultimately a major scheme that will result in a huge payout for everyone involved in the company.

Acting
Jim Carrey does as he always does in this movie by just going out and having a blast with the script. The movie looks more like Carrey running around, playing on set, creating things as he goes along, than actual scripting. The combination of Leoni and Carrey together is absolutely hilarious. They make for one interesting couple that seem to have more fun than anything. Their relationship is believable and they just seem to have blast together in this movie, making it much more buyable that they are 'REALLY' together and not just faking it for the movie.
The dialogue in the movie is great and really creates for some excellent comedic performances, mainly by Carrey who really dominates in this role.
Comedy
This movie is completely packed full of hilarious moments. Just the way that Carrey reacts to the many different situations makes for an absolutely wonderful, funny movie, but throw in the different concepts which are just so incredibly far out there, and you just won't be able to stop laughing.
While the main comedy comes from the actually movements of Carrey, they are aided by the scripting itself and the concepts involved throughout the movie, which are ideas that really make for a funny concept for a movie. Carrey really adds a huge hand and makes this movie what it is. His animated personality, truly makes a huge impact for this film.
While the comedy is somewhat simple and stupid for a lot of people, it is perfect for myself. You are going to laugh, but only if you can let loose and take the time to try and step outside of yourself for a few hours.
Final Thoughts
Probably one of the best comedies of 2005. The movie is fairly packed from start to finish with laughs, without rushing the pace of the movie at the same time. While the comedy is a bit on the stupid side, if you are willing to let go and enjoy the movie for what it is, then you are going to love this movie.
