Only if the drive was more reliable...

Written: Jun 15 '01
Pros:Large capacity & fast (at one time)
Cons:Very unreliable, expensive, & technology of the past
The Bottom Line: Why jaz? There are too many cost-effective alternatives that are actually more reliable than such expensive & unreliable product!

If I did not have so many jaz cartridges, I probably would not be using my jaz drive. As a recording musician who primarily works off of a computer, my demand for a large capacity removable storage device is strong. To meet my demand, I first chose iomega's 1st generation external jaz 1G drive some time back in 97 or so. It was wonderful back then until it turned out to be so unreliable. The drive stopped working and I ended up upgrading to iomega's new jaz 2G drive. Unfortunately, the 2G drive did not do much better than its predecessor and now I'm on my 3rd jaz drive. Currently, CD-RW is available at reasonable cost and newer hard disc drives feature extremely large capacity for much less money. There seems to be too many cost-effective alternatives that are actually more reliable than jaz drive to justify purchase of this unreliable product. Especially with the advent of writable DVD medias, jaz drive will become obsolete in no time unless iomega can come up with a solution to improve their product very soon.
