I downloaded at a rock solid consistent 150 Kb/s. Actual download speeds vary according to how far from their DSL stations your are located. The farther out you are the farther from advertised speed you will be. There really is no way to know how fast your connection is going to be until you try it out, unfortunately. Anyways, on to my review.
For the money you pay, DSL is the best bang for your buck you're gonna get. Cable freaks who talk about the blistering speed of cable internet don't realize the price premium they're paying for that. Also, keep in mind that your download speeds fluctuate with the time of day, as you share the same cable connection with that of all your neighbors, so the more people that are using the internet in your neighborhood the slower your connection will be. At around 2am with cable you can expect 600 Kb/s, however if its 7pm I used to get around 15-30 Kb/s....a far cry from my rock solid 150 Kb/s I had with DSL service.
The kicker is, I could get 2 DSL connections (no reason to) and still pay less than if I had 1 Cable internet connection. You can do anything you want on the internet smoothly (stream video, upload/download stuff, browse image-intensive intenractive websites) with DSL and pay a fraction of the price of Cable Internet.
If you have the cash to blow get cable. If you like to keep your utility/entertainment bills cheap get DSL.
So to summarize:
DSL Internet - your speed will never change, if its fast it will always be fast, if you're one of the unlucky few who has a slow DSL connection, it will always be slow. It is MUCH cheaper than Cable.
Cable Internet - overall faster than DSL, but with an MUCH higher price tag. Your speed will fluctuate with the time of day and can go from slow to blazing. Best performance overall if you don't mind spending the cash.
