Top 10 no-nonsense well made moviesJun 30 '02 (Updated Jul 04 '02) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Absolutely the best must watch movies. Most of the movies in the best-movies list I've seen are self-involved look-what-a-smart-film-i-made flicks. Now the movies I think are the best are the ones that bring out any predominant emotion inside you - anger, fear, sadness. Whether you agree with me or not, you should see these movies: 10. Dead Man walking It does exactly what it sets out to do - make you sad without you knowing the reason for it. You surely cannot sympathize with the killer and rapist (Sean Penn) but his transformation from defiant to remorseful as his hour of execution gets near is very moving. 9. American Beauty I'm sure most of us view life as a temporary journey sort of a thing - we are not really living but just really waiting to die. After a point you dont give a damn about anything or anyone and go through everything in a half-dazed sort of a way, looking for a meaning to your existence. Kevin Spacey portrays such a character perfectly. Leaves you feeling the utter futility of everything in the end, but that you can kind of try to enjoy the simple things of life without getting too attached to anything. 8. Requiem for a dream Very effective portrayal of drug abusers. By the end you feel like one youreslf and get a feel how such a person would spiral down in life. I felt terrified of substance abuse by the end of it. 7. Saving Private Ryan Tom Hanks feels hazy, all sounds cut off, during intense war activity. The movie leaves an aftertaste of heroic deeds, yet a feeling of sadness about the whole concept of war. I mean I've always felt that way - look at problems from a wider perspective, letting loose millions of people to kill other people would just not work. 6. Traffic Another effective portrayal of drug abusers, but now from three different viewpoints - administration and policy viewpoint, viewpoint of a person who actually risks his life to fight trafficking, and the abuser himself. Very effective. 5. American History X Shows the buildup of feeling of racism inside an individual, and his subsequent change of opinions. Norton does a wonderful job !! 4. Memento Now this is a smart movie, if ever there was one. Stylish, throws all rules out of the window, leaves you thinking about the movie for many days. In the end thats what movies are about (if they are not attempting to convey a message), to entertain you ! 3. Pulp Fiction I did not like it at first, I mean people killing other people and all that, but look at it from a comic-book point of view. You see it, enjoy it while its going on and forget about it. Keeps you hooked while its going on. The dialogues are very cleverly written. 2. The Shawshak Redemption A feel-good movie. I would be surprised to see anyone who would not like the movie. Leaves you very inspired and moved !! 1. The Sixth Sense It brings out raw fear and terror inside you. Perfect screenplay and direction. The background music blends very very well with whats going on to bring out the shivers. People say its all in the final twist, but twist or no twist, its the best movie I've ever seen. |
