The Bottom Line Read this list and then go watch any of these movies you have not seen for some excellent action/adventure movie watching.

First, let me start off by saying that I would like to classify many of these movies in a separate category for best science fiction films of all time. So for those of you who feel like some of these movies do not belong in the action/adventure category, a lack of a best science fiction category forces me to lump them in here which removes some other noteworthy films in this genre (i.e rest of the Indiana Jones trilogy, more Star Wars films, Terminator, etc….).

1. The Matrix
– Drastically raised the bar for all future movies in terms of its technical prowess and special effects. The stunning use of stills to freeze a scene and rotate the image around to give the audience a totally unique perspective on the action was unprecedented. The “bullet-time” effects were incredible, along with the fantastic fight scenes that mixed well with a story that worked excellently on many levels.
2. Star Wars
- A classic action/adventure/sci-fi film that paved to the way for many movies to follow (both those in the Star Wars series and else wise). Developed with relatively unknown actors at the time, this movie established a fan base that is unparalleled by any other film. The plot is superficially simple, yet has great complexity and attention to detail that sci-fi fans love to delve into as many character’s lives intertwine throughout the history of this story.
3. Spiderman
- An extremely new film that broke all sorts of box office records (and for a good reason). This film paved the way for many future Spiderman movies (hopefully to continue with more success than the Batman series). It combined believable characters with excellent actions scenes, while holding true to its comic book beginnings to appease the truly hardcore fan.
4. Die Hard
- What list of action/adventure films could be complete without giving Die Hard its just desserts. This movie had tons of explosions along with the lone wolf hero that so many movie fans crave. The gritty performance by Bruce Willis enraptured audiences all over, and made this movie into an instant action classic.
5. Gladiator
- While using space-age computer technology to warp the audience back in time, this movie contained a deeper story than many of the other movies mentioned in this list. The fight sequences were intense, leaving audiences hanging on the edge of their seats. Definitely not a brainless movie as many action movies tend to be.
6. Terminator 2 – Judgement Day
- This is one of the few sequels that exceeds the quality of the original. Like The Matrix, T2 pushed the envelope in terms of special effects and the integration of these effects into the film. A huge budget movie for the time, ended up being worth every dime. The plot is extremely thought provoking, yet at the same time appeases the true action/adventure fan with many explosions and lots and lots of guns.
7. Heat
- This movie will definitely not make everyone’s list, but it is one of my personal favorites. The juxtaposition of Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro’s characters in this movie makes for a great story. The downtown Los Angeles shootout scene near the end of the movie is one of the classic actions sequences of all time. A little too long for some fans of this genre, but not for my tastes.
8. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
- The first of this classic trilogy, and in my opinion the best one of the three. One of Harrison Ford’s defining roles, this movie combines great stunts and special effects, with an intricate plot with some very funny one-liners. A funny bit of behind the scenes information involves the scene where Indy shoots the guy rather than the drawn out fight scene originally planned due to Harrison Ford being ill at the time of filming.
9. Lord of The Rings
- This Christmas 2001 release exceeded the expectations of most viewers. The first of a 3-part adaptation of the classic novel trilogy, this movie inspired awe and wonderment in the audience. An excellent cast, that seemed to work together extremely well. The special effects were fantastic, and the story was extremely compelling.
10. Blood Sport
- While many may not agree with this pick, it is one of my favorite action movies. It has all the elements of a classic, cheesy action movie: buff dude, hot chick, lots of fight scenes, lame story. A classic Jean Claude Van Damm role that he seemingly played in all of his movies (see Lionheart, Kickboxer, etc…). His acting is terrible, the dialogue lame, but man the fight scenes were cool.

And so that is my top ten. Perhaps you don’t agree with some (or maybe even any) of the choices, but believe me I think that this list is by no means as bad as some of the other ones people have posted in this category.
