Rain Damage (Reply to this comment)
by bugmenot
Just an idea - but if the thing breaks from heavy rain, why not just get a cheap umbrealla or anything else you can attach to the thing to shield it from rain?

Mosquito Traps Propane or Carbon Dioxide Feeds (Reply to this comment)
by mbfig
This might help if you are considering purchasing a gas fed mosquito trap. I have used both the mosquito magnet (propane bottle) and the mosquito-slayer (carbon dioxide bottle). They both work! However I found that the less expensive mosquito slayer by Bantix Worldwide worked better. It seems that although Carbon Dioxide is an attractant to female mosquitoes, a controlled flow (mimics a mammal breathing) is more of an attractant than a continuous flow - I guess she thinks that if she flies into a full carbon dioxide atmosphere, she will be asphyxiated - whereas a plume of carbon dioxide sensed at intervals (from the mosquito-slayer) indicates a living "blood carrying" mammal? On the positive side for the "magnet", it is a pleasant looking piece of machinery and talking point with the neighbors, On the negative side for the mosquito-slayer, its basically just a black box and is fairly small and the carbon dioxide bottle can't be hidden easily. I tell them that the mosquitoes don't seem to care about the CO2 bottle, they just fly into the trap. My neighbors can't believe that I would spend that much on killing mosquitoes. I just remind them about viruses like West Nile and Malaria. I spent the money thinking about my family's safety.

I just went to SonicWeb's website and it seems to be prices at $199 now with free shipping; think I'll get a couple at the price.

Thanks for all of the advice.

Was this a Mosquito Deleto 2003? Heard last year's model was recalled, and was wondering about this years.

Mosquito Deleto lasted 3 months and died (Reply to this comment)
by ronray
I have had same problem as above with unit. It worked for first 90 days and now will not light any more.
Coleman has really disappointed me. When I was a boy our Coleman propane units worked flawlessly. Now this thing needs service after only 90 days. Who cares what the problem is. It is junk as far as I am concerned.
It didn't last long enough to determine if it is effective at killing mosquitos. 'nuff said!

Freedom Model- Mosquito Magnet .. (Reply to this comment)
by meherrin02
Hi, I live in the Williamsburg,Virginia area which is known for its swamps and mosquito problems. I purchased the Freedom Model from Front gate.com because it had a 395 day guarantee on these Mosquito Magnet Machines. Like other writers I was determined to get the drop on this Mosquito Problem early this year. The machine arrived promptly & worked fine for about 3 weeks
(1 propane tankful) which I had purchased @ Blue-Rhino @ Home Depot. When I went to hook up my second tank of Propane. The 'little bugger' would not re-lite , this was May 2002. I tried several times by holding the safety valve & then pressing the Red Starter Valve. It still would not re-lite...then I began to hear the hiss of a leaky O-ring right at the point where it connects to the machine. I PROMPTLY cut that thing off quick & Called American Biophysics. They had to send me a whole new Housing (took 2 weeks) and at no cost :>) to replace one little O-ring. Well better safe than sorry; or so I thought. After I re hooked up the new housing & reinserted the innards & hooked up the Propane tank again..it STILL wouldn't re-lite. I called American Biophysics again..they said they would send me out a new one pronto. So I wait a week nothing comes, meanwhile my 2 dogs, wife and I our not enjoying our backyard so I bought one of those Coleman Mosquito Deleto's in the interim from Costco for $150. They include a Mosquito Deleto Unit which you set near the woods & 2 repeller units which a chemical & fan unit in them that you set on your patio and or picnic table near your house. They seemed to work great catching just as many mosquito & no-see-ums without a fan as I was getting with the old Mosquito Magnet system. I just know we weren't getting "bit" in the backyard anymore. The Coleman system uses an Octenol,Propane tank system without sucking things into nets (which I learned can be quite expensive..when they need to be replaced.)
Every week, once per week I called American Bio physics to check on when I would be able to get a new brain or innards for my system. Every week I was PUT OFF from June to September 7, 2002. I heard every excuse in the book by then. Computer Problems, Order not in system etc..about 15 different excuses all of them delays in receiving any good customer service. Finally my spouse and I gave up & returned the unit to Frontgate.com in that first week of September 2002. Front gate "apologized for the service we received from American Biophysics" and "explained" that they had 'crushed' by the frenzy of the West Nile Virus in the US; that even suppliers like Front gate couldn't get new "brains" for their systems. Everyone was on a 2 month wait for systems. Well at least Front gate Customer Service didn't 'Spin the Truth' with us..they were very gracious & HONEST. This Frontgate Company did pickup the return shipping of the product back to them & they full refunded my 800 purchase to my AMEX card some 5 months after I purchased the unit. Talk about a Good Guarantee; I whole heartedly recommend Front gate.com for buying Mosquito Magnets cause at least if they don't work you have some recourse...for 395 days going forward!
As for my backyard.. I am keeping the Coleman units in place for next year...who says you have to spend big bucks to avoid the mosquito's ?

Re: Wow! (Reply to this comment)

I'm very glad to offer help to people about this subject. I'd been waiting for the Mosquito Magnet to appear on Epinions so I could write a review on it... then the malfunction of it occurred... then I bought the Sonic Web... and THEN I realized that an opinion about the TOPIC of pest traps would give me a chance to really compare these two products. It was very satisfying to write all about this experience, and even more satisfying to see that other people are glad that I did.
I also explained to the customer service rep for the Mosquito Magnet that I was a reviewer on Epinions.com. He didn't know about us yet, so I explained that I intended to write a comprehensive review and told him the URL for the site. Maybe that will result in more of an effort to solve my problem!
I'm checking Epinions before I buy ANYTHING substantial any more! 8-)

This sounds like something we could use, that's for sure. 'Til our finances permit, I guess we'll have to go with fly paper..lol

Need some here... (Reply to this comment)
by groverchick
We've got some huge mosquito's here and I have really sweet blood so it's not a good mix. If I do happen to be outside at night chances are I will get eaten alive. I will have to check into these traps. I think I like the Sonic Web one better. I'll just find an extension cord somewhere cuz at least it's reliable! Thanks for all that information. It was really helpful. Maybe now I can stop using that Off! Insect repellent...

Great Review! (Reply to this comment)
by lorace
I agree with Susie. You told everything we needed to know.
Terrible problem. My goodness, I'm from New Jersey where these little devils have their breeding grounds...then they teach them to fly and send them to Florida.
Wow! The price difference is something else. I do hope you make out okay.
Thanks,
Lorace

Fantastic review Heidi! Your review not only tells us about the product, but really teaches, which is great. I had no idea these were so costly, but if they work, then I guess they are a worthwhile investment for those who have a real problem.
Thanks you for sharing your knowledge and experience!
