great list (Reply to this comment)

a unique and refreshing top ten list from the 80s. i'm especially glad you included 'king of comedy' (which i just recently wrote an epinion of, wink wink hint hint) as well as scorsese's other overlooked gem from the 80s, "after hours". it takes guts to buck the trend, not include 'raging bull' but then include two other scorsese films. don't know if i'd agree with keeping 'raging bull' off the list, but at least it made it into your finalists list!
also, the inclusion of 'drugstore cowboy' made my day a little better. i'm a big van sant fan, and this movie helped me become that way. as for 'lost in america', i just watched it a second time recently, and i loved it all over again! the only question i have for you, since you have a fondness for albert brooks, is why no woody allen films made the cut (especially 'purple rose of cairo' or 'hannah and her sisters'). a small quibble all in all... great list!
take care,
chad.

Dear Bill: A unique list. I would have picked ATLANTIC CITY, perhaps THE KING OF COMEDY. And you are probably right about several others - i.e., ROGER AND ME. But some . . . I will have to think about.
Congratulations!
All the best.

Nick, others: thanks for the comments!
I realize Pee-wee's Big Adventure is a somewhat controversial pick, but I stand by it. Years from now people will still remember this character. As one astute critic noted: "his attitude toward (the) world is nothing short of philosophical".
As much as I love movies, somehow I've passed up Blade Runner. Also that other sci-fi noir Dark City. Eventually I'll catch them.
Rightly or wrongly, here's what I started out with:
Do the Right Thing
Full Metal Jacket
Raising Arizona
Tampopo *
Aliens
Brazil
Blue Velvet
This is Spinal Tap
Roger & Me *
Fanny and Alexander
The King of Comedy *
Koyaanisqatsi
Moonlighting
The Road Warrior
Dragonslayer
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Empire Strikes Back
Raging Bull
The Last Temptation of Christ
Stranger Than Paradise
The Night of the Shooting Stars
Local Hero
Broadcast News
Atlantic City *
Black Widow
Coal Miner's Daughter
Comfort and Joy
Glory
Extreme Prejudice
Lost in America *
Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence
Modern Romance
Never Cry Wolf
Pee-wee's Big Adventure *
Sweetie *
After Hours *
A Passage to India *
Drugstore Cowboy *

Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.... (Reply to this comment)
by Lark729_89
I recall that era when this movie came out on video.
I dropped in to see my sister and heard those incredible sounds of Pee-wee.
Had no idea was the racket was about but did find out and I planked myself on a chair and watched the movie intently.
It was so silly and drastically funny. Wow! time flies!
Your choices of movies are good ones.

Interesting selection, and I can't disagree..... (Reply to this comment)

...with some of them like Atlantic City and Lost in America (though not as #1). But Pee Wee?
I'd like to throw in "Blade Runner" from 1982 as my #1 for the decade....post-modern sci-fi has been derivative ever since even as it has become box office boffo, including the recently-released and highly-overrated Minority Report, which can't touch Blade Runner's film noir undertones.
I also think the German submarine warfare flick "Das Boot" (1981) and Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket"(1986)deserve consideration...each, in different ways...made an important statement in the genre of war movies that was not matched again until the late 90s when "Saving Private Ryan" moved the whole genre to the next technical level.
As usual, excellent fodder for discussion. I love these lists!
cheers,
nick

Very nice job compiling this list. And you deserve an extra bonus for listing Pee Wee's Big Adventure among the greatest films of the 1980s decade. I couldn't agree more; it's one of my favorites. Pee Wee epitomized the happy go-lucky guy all of us wish we could be. He truly symbolizes the adult with the heart of a child. If we all behaved like Pee Wee Herman, the world will be a much less cynical place... (sorry, got carried away =) ).
Great list anyhow! I haven't seen most of these films, but I definitely will consider checking them out.

Excellent Top 10 List (Reply to this comment)
by BigJack
Your quick summary of each movie is better than 90% of the full-length reviews of them here at Epinions.
Although I disagree with some, and haven't seen others, a good list with one personal exception -
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure sticks out - can't see it on the list, but I know there are others who are huge fans of it.
Great job

Roger & Me (Reply to this comment)
by lambchops
Loved this movie, but probably in part because I am a Michigan girl born and bred. Both of my parents grew up in GM Flint during the boom in the 1940's through 1960's. In fact, both of my grandpas in addition to three of four great grandfathers worked for GM. I have a long history with the company.
That movie was brilliant. I loved the followup in addition to his short-lived TV show just as much. Great review.

Great List, not that I agree... (Reply to this comment)
by d_fienberg
If I kept myself to only ten, I don't think a single one of these would be on my list, much as I like some of them (Atlantic City, Drugstore Cowboy, and maybe King of Comedy would be candidates for my second ten). But it's still a good and very well reasoned list...
