The Undeniably Exquisite Washington Park
by Epicure | Jul 05 '02
A newcomer restaurant with an old-timer celebrity chef. A classy joint, bursting with potential, that is a credit to its neighborhood.

It'd be very interesting to hear your recollections of Washington Square Park from when you use to live in the city. So many neighborhoods have changed so dramatically, even in just the last seven years or so. What was your old neighborhood?

Thanks, Tom! I think you would really enjoy Washington Park, particularly because of your interest in design and architecture. You'd also probably be able to describe the architectural features better than I can. One of these days I would love to take a class on that subject. I've noticed how your discussion of architecture adds another dimension to your reviews. Always a pleasure to hear from you.

The Washington Square Park/NYU area is great for dining, both upscale and casual. One of the top Italian restaurants in the city, Babbo (212-777-0303) is located right off WSP in a lovely townhouse. Just try not to get one of the tables under the staircase. I've also had wonderful meals at Blue Hill (212-539-1776), which serves up creative American cuisine in a subdued, low-key setting. For a hearty brunch or late night snack in a charming French bistro atmosphere, I would recommend Blue Ribbon Bakery (212-337-0404). For delicious sushi, go to Tomoe (212-777-9346), but be prepared for long lines due to its no-reservations policy. The chef/owner of Babbo also opened a more casual restaurant in the Village called Lupa (212-982-5089), a Roman trattoria which has some of the best pasta dishes in the city. The best lobster roll and clam chowder in the city can be found at Pearl Oyster Bar (212-691-8211). Finally, one of my longtime favorites, Junno's (212-627-7995), a creative Japanese restaurant, housed in a stylish bar-like setting. If you go early, it's a relaxing and quiet environment. After 9 or 10, it becomes more of a scene. As you can see, you'll have a wealth of choices - I could go on and on. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions. Happy dining!

brings back some strange memories for me of my days when I lived in the city in the early sixties just before I got married...

Soft shell crabs are absolutely one of my favorite all time delicacies..

I enjoyed reading this as I do all your reviews and of course, you have made me famished..LOL

This sounds like a "must try" place for my list. Your descriptions of the food were so brilliantly clear I could almost taste that banana dessert....Beautiful. Tom Barnes

Soon my son will be starting at NYU, so I expect to be visiting the area more often. Thanks for this new recommendation. Any other places in the NYU neighborhood you think are worth a visit?
