| e_commentor's Full Review: Samsung Super-WriteMaster SE-S184M 18X DVD±RW Dual... |
My colleague had a DVD burner in his laptop. We used to backup our office data on his laptop DVD burner. We therefore needed a DVD burner for our official works. It was decided that we buy an external USB based DVD burner so that any of us could carry it hook on his computer and back up his data or anything else for that matter.
USB Connectivity
This external DVD writer hooks up on USB 2.0 that has a speed of 480 Mega Bits per seconds. Many users are not comfortable with opening the computer for installing an Internal DVD writer. Though this was not the reason why we got it. Your computer must have a spare USB 2.0.
The Hardware
The hardware consists of three pieces. The DVD writer itself, a USB cable to connect to your computer and a power supply. The power supply gives out 5V and is rated at 1.5 ampere. Though USB usually supplies 5V in external USB device, the current rating is not sufficient to supply enough current for DVD writer.
SW Installation
The Samsung DVD writer comes with a installation CD that has some other softwares besides Nero Express 6. The install process is easy. I selected all the default options when installing the software.
Writing Speed
The Samsung SH-S182M burner can write upto 16x speed. It took me 12 minutes to burn about 350 Mega Bytes of Data. This is quite good though not instantaneous.
Buffering
One of the features I like about this external DVD writer is that it buffers that the data to be written into its own local memory and therefore frees the system resources while writing. It translates into the fact that you can continue to work on the computer even while DVD write process is going on. In traditional Internal DVD or CD writers the systems looks like hanging for few seconds every now and then and you can not do anything.
Light Scribe
LightScribe is a feature by which you can create a label on the CD / DVD using lasers on the CD/DVD. You need a specialized media. In addition the DVD or CD writer should be able to support it. The Samsung SE-S184M supports Light Scribe Media writing. I have however not tried it as I do not have the LightScribe media. I will update my opinion if and when I try it.
Dependability
I have used it just once for now. I looks ok. Including some other persons in my office we have used it several times and it has not gives any problem so far. I will update it in future if I see any issue. DVD or CD writers have mechanical moving parts in addition to problems with laser.
