| fuche_bu's Full Review: The Village Voice |
As a native and lifelong resident of the Philadelphia area, I have also had proximity and easy access to New York City. Manhattan is a phenomenal place to spend a night or week-end. There is so much going on it isn't funny. In fact one problem in New York is figuring out which event to attend and worrying about what else you might be missing.
For as long as I have been visiting the Big Apple, I have had a fondness for the Village Voice. This has been a vital staple of the New York experience for me for close to two decades now. I've always sought it out for the listings on all the events going on.
The club listings always gave me a game plan when I was mapping out a New York venture. I used to happily plunk down a buck to buy it as soon as I got off the train at Pennsylvania Station. It often set me up with an itinerary for the night and clued me in on performers coming to town at a later date.
I also gain great amusement from reading the Voice Bulletin Board usually posted on the back page. Some of the personal ads are a real hoot. I always found it good for a chuckle.
Of course, the drawback of the Voice is a very heavy liberal bias in the articles. This may not be a problem if you are a liberal but I generally prefer news to be presented in a more neutral manner. (I would also complain if a too conservative bias was displayed too). I read the articles with a grain of salt. I agree with some of it but I also laugh off a lot of what they write.
But that is a minor complaint. The Voice provides great reviews for music, art and movies and the listings for upcoming events are thorough. One can plan an entire week just by reading the Voice. And I should mention that it is now a free paper. Just find a box that isn't empty and you are in business.
The Village Voice is a great weekly paper but I would suggest it more for a young crowd that goes out a lot than for a serious audience seeking real news. As much as I respect editor Nat Hentof, I can't advocate the sometimes too liberal bias of the news coverage. Nevertheless, it is a great resource for discovering New York events. If you plan a New York visit, consult the Village Voice for advise and listings.
