If you want answers, Radio Shack is not the place to go.
Sad to say, but the shack is just a shadow of it's former self.
In 1980, I discovered the shack while I was a teenager. All us geeks hung out there and swapped information on audio, computers, cb radio, etc. There were many parts and gadgets and gizmos lining the walls. The salespeople were like guru's to us technogeeks. There was no internet then just catalogs and mail order.
Fast forward to 2006 when I started getting back into kit building and model trains again after a long absence with my son. I needed some simple switches and things, and the shack was bare, I mean absolutely no help to me whatsoever.
Oh, they had some parts that were dusty and laying there since 1990. A few common over priced parts that could be had cheaper thru the internet. IMO that's what killed the shack-the internet. There is a wealth of knowledge and supplies available from countless suppliers, something Radio Shack could never do.
They are a good source for cables, adapters, plugs, batteries and other audio/video accessories but at high retail prices, sometimes in a pinch,it can't be helped.
I don't think the shack has long to live. They have what everybody else has, commodity electronics at high prices.
They also have a strict return policy. In order to return or exchange an item it must be in it's box with all the packing material and paperwork,or they won't help you.
So any purchase you make be sure it works to your satisfaction before discarding the box. And always keep the manual as it spells out the term of the warranty!
UPDATE:
I'm sorry everyone. I was reviewing the brick and mortar store experience, I did'nt realize this was for the online version.
I did order a few things from the online store, such as a S-video switcher and a HDTV antenna along with some A/V cables.
Everything came neatly packed and quickly with a tracking # emailed to me as soon as it shipped.
Ordering from the website was fast and easy.Just be aware that the prices are the same as the stores and there is shipping and sales tax to deal with. Although if you order over a certain dollar amount the shipping is free.
One thing I forgot to mention: Radio Shack has an excellent online support (Radishack.com/support) for many, but not all, of their legacy products. Looking for misplaced operating instructions? Parts list? some even have blownup assembly diagrams.
Radio Shack is great as an online store and for online support. I guess they saw the trend and wholly embraced it.
