Pros: Super portable, attaches to just about anything, ease of use. 1 gig capacity. Small size.
Cons: Earphones are not as nice as the Shuffle, must download the software off the internet.
The Bottom Line: This iPod is a winner; I actually like it even better than my other one for its portability and simplicity of design. Plus you can have fun with it!

This iPod is a winner; I actually like it even better than my other one for its portability and simplicity of design. After getting this one, I find it hard to imagine lugging my other one around and worrying about if it will get broken or too cold or something. I am going to attach the other one to some speakers and leave it at home from now on and take along my Shuffle.
I ordered this iPod the fist day it came out in the Apple store. It was just so neat and I had recently gotten a new job so I thought I would splurge a bit to celebrate. Ordering it from the Apple store was a breeze and you can get it engraved for free through the store, as well as have a gift note placed in the package on some nice heavy cardstock in a nice stylish envelope with a metallic embossed apple logo on it. (Which I did, just to be silly.)
One beef I had with my order is that the site didnt tell me until the order had been placed that the new shuffles werent coming out till the end of October. I almost cancelled my order but decided to wait for it.
My IPod came today, they delivered it via FedEx. I ripped open the box and found it presented very nicely in a clear hard plastic box showcasing the IPod, with my gift card in a small envelope with an embossed apple on the front. If you are buying this for a gift, just FYI, you shouldnt need to even open the cardboard box and there was no invoice included so you dont even need to take that out. (I dont like to leave the price tags on gifts, personally.) The new iPod Shuffle is roughly the size of a short book of matches. The control wheel in the pictures you see is about the size of a quarter. The lightweight design and sturdy clip make it easy to wear just about anywhere you want. I actually was using it in my hair last night. (I will tell you how I did that comfortably at the end of the review, so if you are interested, scroll down.)
Once you get the clear plastic box open (there are practically invisible stickers on the ends of it and one of them has a place you can pull up on to get it started.) The iPod is attached to a clear plastic card but is easy enough to remove. Underneath this, you will find your earphones, getting started guide, earphones, mini dock, 2 sets of covers for the earbuds on the earphones, an important product information booklet with warranty information and stuff inside, a business sized quick reference card and a couple Apple stickers. This iPod didnt come fully charged and required about 2 hours charging.
The only thing I didnt like about this iPod, its presentation and packaging and included accessories were the headphones. These are not the nice headphones you get with the more expensive iPod. I am probably going to yank the headphones from my other iPod because they are nicer. They sound good though, they just arent as nice.
This iPod is simple to use. The controls are very straightforward. On the top are an on/off switch and a switch to go between shuffle and just play the list in order. There is also a tiny charge indicator light which will also notify you in code about certain things, such as errors. (The key is on that business card sized quick reference guide.) On the front is the playing control in s circular format. The center is the play/pause button, left and right are forward and back and up and down are, of course, volume buttons. On the bottom is the jack the headphones plug into, it also doubles as the plug for the mini dock, so you cannot have it docked and listen at the same time.
The mini dock is pretty cute and comes with a cord minder. It plugs into the USB port on your computer and this is how you program and charge it. Now iPods dont come with the software anymore so you will have to go and download iTunes off the website. The URL is in the quick start guide. Once you have iTunes installed you can put all the music you want on your computer from CD, other programs or the iTunes store. Loading your shuffle is easy. Just dock it and plug it in to your USB port and you will see settings there for you to either choose to load a playlist or let iTunes randomly pick what to put on your iPod. With a whole gig of memory, you can put up to something like 250 songs on it, depending on the length of song and stuff. I dont know what the battery life is, but I listened to it for hours last night and it didnt run out of batteries.
Because this is such a simple machine, I really dont have that much more to say about it. it would be nice if it came with better earphones, I also think it would be nice if these still came with the software CDs but that is more me being lazy than anything. I really really like it and would recommend it to anyone.
Oh ya, how I wear it in my hair
Now I know there are probably 100 different ways to wear this in your hair but heres what I did, I put the front part of my hair back in a sort of half ponytail and used this iPod to clip it, making sure the earphone hold was pointing down. You might want to use a pony tailer or a rubber band to actually hold the hair though, mine began slipping out the open side if the clip after a couple hours. You mileage may vary.
Then I took the headphones cord and put the earbuds in from behind, instead of wrapping the cord around my neck to plug it into the iPod. This is also nice in that you can just take the earbuds off and let them hang down the front if you should need to take them off for one reason or another. It is a fun way to wear it and I imagine I am going to be doing all kinds of experimenting with it. Enjoy.
