The other day a pharmaceutical representative came
into the department to introduce a new product. We began talking and she told me how much she admired those nurses who could "stick it out in a hospital".
I asked for an explanation. She said all her life she wanted to be a nurse;she wanted to follow in her mother's footsteps. Her family was so proud & happy when graduated from the same nursing school as her mom.Then she got her first job.She was a new grad on an oncology floor assigned to eight patients with total care expected. All her dreams of talking to patients,holding their hands,offering comfort and doing things to ease their pain vanished before her eyes. She lasted 2 months. She vows never to return to the hospital setting.She asked,"what happened to nursing?"I explained it is still there,there are more obstacles,your need to be a time management pro,you need good feet,several hands,a good brain, but mostly you need a big heart that will help you find the time to do the things that make a difference to someone who needs you. I told her to give it another try.She will find the right fit somewhere.
