Beware - Warranty Doesn't Cover

Jul 10 '02

The Bottom Line Don't buy a Dell!

Dell's warranty is full of loopholes to the corporation's advantage. Our daughter purchased an Inspiron Notebook in December from their website and began using it in her graduate classes. A few weeks ago the motherboard failed. She called the service number and was asked many questions leading her to tell them that yes, a lightning storm had passed through town, but NOTHING else in the apartment building was affected. Sorry - can't cover "acts of God". She sent the unit in on Jun 26th explaining that lightning had nothing to do with the failure and was told by one of their representatives that yes, they would repair and replace the motherboard at no charge. July 2nd a message from Dell said, no, she would have to pay repairs over $900, more than she paid for the computer originally. Meanwhile, 3 summer graduate classes without her computer, we are still arguing with Dell about this issue. We have finally settled to pay $269 for labor and get the machine shipped back. This is July 10th. We've owned IBM, Gateway, Toshiba, and Compaq computers and have NEVER had worse service than Dell. I purchased a Toshiba laptop at the same time my daughter purchased from Dell. She tho't Dell had a better reputation for service. The Toshiba hasn't needed service so I can't say how they would handle it.
