i was formerly a Verizon customer that got hooked into the Cingular rate plans.
The only thing that sucks about cingular is the reception. I notice that it doesn't really have anything to do with physical location. For example, i'll be sitting in my house, and one second the reception bars will be full, but then the next, I will not have service. I am very lucky to be able to make/receive calls in my house (i know about 10 other ppl that cannot).
I frequently get dropped calls. It is pretty annoying but I can live with it b/c of the great rate plans.
No one else (at the time of this epinion) offers unlimited service in the SF bay. On my old verizon plan i had 1000 off peak, and though i never came close to using those minutes up, something about 'unlimited' just makes me feel warm .
For the most part the customer care is good. They always try to be helpful and don't give you attitude unlike verizon. I got my plan in May 2001, but I heard that the new rate plans have different off peak hours. (9pm -7am). DO NOT BE FOOLED. The plans used to be 8pm to 6am but all the newer ones start at 9pm. That extra hour makes a hell of a difference.
I would say that if you are the type of cell phone user that makes calls in only a few places, ie work, home, friends house, then cingular is good for you (unless of course you can't get reception in those places). If you aren't then pick another carrier because you will frequently receive no service or dropped calls.
Some dealers will let you 'test drive' an activated cingular cell phone. Take it to the places you will be making calls most and test out the reception.
