Pros: Good national sports coverage, interesting local news, an attainable crossword, inexpensive.
Cons: Probably does the homeless more good as insulation, as opposed to truly memorable or unbiased.
The Bottom Line: For early local newsprint in Vegas, this is the paper you will get (cheaply) unless you want to pay extra money for available out of town and better national newspapers.

| triple_irons's Full Review: Las Vegas Review-Journal |
Ive been a reader of a variety of local newspapers in my 2 score and 6 years and they havent made me any wiser, so goes the knowledge is wisdom argument, but is information knowledge? Einstein and a few others dont think so; nevertheless, Im not trying to start a scientific/philosophical debate here so Ill just give my opinion on the Las Vegas Review Journal, Im going to do this a little differently however as I am familiar with other newspapers that are review-able on this site and will get to the RJ in chronological order (its last).
Tulsa World (hometown paper): Havent physically seen or otherwise read this newspaper in nearly 30 years and they don't have a crossword puzzle at the paper's online version. (watch for the crossword element throughout this review) Did get a job through the classifieds as an electricians helper back in 77. I only mention this paper as historical background/personal trivia.

The Christian Science Monitor: Is a footnote as we lived in Boston and the surrounding area for a few years (73/75) now this is a renowned and award winning newspaper despite its religious bent. As a 14 year old I didnt read it much though. The Boston Globe was also a paper that I remember in the household, it was the fatter of the two.

Stars and Stripes: 81 to 84 being stationed in Germany this was the only readily available paper to read about news from home. Again the sports page my main focus, Im sure its much different now with the advent of the Internet. No online crossword puzzle.

Long Beach Press Telegram: Living in Long Beach from 84 to 87, I would pick this paper up somewhat frequently and was a regular sports page reader and crossword devotee. I enjoyed in depth coverage of the Angels, Dodgers, and Rams. Still do the online crossword puzzle.

St Louis Post Dispatch: Read from 91 to 96 it was during this time that I read more than the sports page, weather, and comics along with doing the crossword puzzle. I had a long bus ride to word 40+ min. and liked to save the puzzle to do in the break room. Found more local news than on television, but national news was not so in depth. I did find a variety of differing viewpoints in the editorial section. The classifieds yielded a job. Theres no online crossword, but I still read the news of the weird and the local news of the Cardinals, and Rams.

And last but not least the
The Las Vegas Review Journal: I read this paper regularly from 96 until 2003 and found its national coverage and local editorials pretty much one sided. Formerly owned by the Mormon connected Donrey Media, they have since merged. The sports pages cover most all teams and all sports, comprehensive baseball and football, basketball and hockey news with shorter stories dealing with the other sports. The local news is always interesting, if you like reading about crime and corruption from Judges to the onetime mob mouthpiece now Mayor Goodman. The Ted Binion murder case was covered well and reading of sordid strip club goings on were always entertaining. The paper was inexpensive and is even now but $4.00 a week (subscription rate). I still enjoy the crossword online puzzle.

Recommendation:
I liked the Review Journal better than the other Las Vegas paper, the Sun, which came in the afternoon. The Sun, owned by the Greenspun family was said to have an agenda that was not well matched to the whole community, whatever that means. I took the RJ regardless; it had better coverage and was on sale earlier. I nowadays get all my national news from the cable networks and the internet. But if my wife gets her wish and we move back to Vegas it will again be the Review Journal in our household. Without substance, the speech will perish, but thats not what Ill be reading it for.
Another entry into the Lean-n-mean Five write-off.
