I started on piano when I was young too, but I really hated practicing (maybe I was just at the wrong age...) I played a few years (2-3) and stopped. I picked it up again for 2 years in high school, where I finally learned to play my favorite classical piece of all - Pachelbel's Canon in D (at the time I didn't know the name of it, so I had to call it the Alcoholics Anonymous theme ;)

My university (Southern Miss) had the same requirements for music majors - you had to take several piano classes, no matter your instrument of choice.

Great review. I also play the piano and 10 other instruments. We have a Victorian Upright Grand in our home as well from 1835 and it is my pride and joy:)

My son is a huge musician, at the tender age of almost 3:) (Of course, a lot of it has to do with the Wiggles-he he) But, when he first laid eyes on a piano, he started "playing" right away. We're getting him his own for his 3rd birthday! (not a full size-First Act makes a kid-sized one at a reasonable price.) Great job, MaryTara!

Cool! Do you still play the piano? Or did you forget it all?

... The requirements for entering music college in England were that you played two instruments, one of which had to be the piano.

(For the curious: the voice counts as an instrument.)

I have also played since I was young, although not in years as we don't have one. I really want to start my pre-schooler on the piano next year using the suzuki method, but since we won't have one by then either unfortunately we won't be able to. I thought about a keyboard, but everything I have read (and everyone I have talked to) says unless your keyboard has weighted keys, don't do it.

So, we are going to start violin instead. Not my first choice, but will have to do.

Great epinion, MT!

Heres to The Piano - Cheers!

I think one just has to look at one Mr Stevie Wonder to see what pleasure can be dervied from a keyboard or in particular the piano. The mans dedication in learning the piano even with his fundamental lack of sight is shown deeply in his beautiful album pieces - most of which contain Piano and all of which contain keyboard.

Take the advice of Marytara - Its sound advice.
