The Bottom Line I hope I just saw DMB on a bad night. Disappointing live show from a great band.
Concert Date: 13 July 2002 Location: Virginia Beach Ampitheater (Lawn Seats) Cost: $40ish per ticket I can already sense the vibe out there that's going to bash this review. It's not very often that I would go out of my way to write a review on much of anything, let alone one that will certainly be against the mainstream on such a popular artist. Let me begin by saying that my wife and I both really like the DMB. We own most of the CD's and listen to them fairly regularly. So, when we found out that DMB was going to be playing locally and would probably be sold out, we and another couple snatched up four tickets at $40 apiece, figuring that we'd most likely love the show, and at worst would get our money's worth from a great band. We were disappointed, to say the least. Dave had Lisa Jones opening for him, and she was all right, if a bit mellow. Her set was probably about 45 minutes, and was very consistent, laid-back music. She plays piano and sings, with a backup group playing drums, stand-up bass, and I think maybe a rhythm guitar. I didn't see a whole lot of her set because I was getting food, but it seemed like pleasant enough music, even if it wasn't exactly getting the crowd going for the main act. Dave shows up to huge applause almost 45 minutes after Lisa Jones left the stage. His set wanders through most of his history, with a good selection of songs, mostly lengthened by extensive solos by the band members. Dave played for almost two hours, including a one-song (?!?) encore. The reason I'm panning the concert is that Dave didn't talk to the audience AT ALL! About every three songs or so, he'd say "Thank you", because everyone was still star-struck and cheering like mad (the show was in fact sold out and the place was packed). I think he said "Virginia" once. He took about a minute of complete silence between every song, exchanging guitars or whatever, and at one point left the stage for almost ten minutes while his band went on and on with jazzy solos. On a side note, my wife and I also recently went to see the Uprooted concert (Young Dubliners, Great Big Sea, and Seven Nations), and that was great at only $25 a ticket. More or less Celtic rock, all three groups were very interactive with the audience, and were lively and polished the entire night. Almost 3 1/2 hour show, and we loved it. After watching those band members play some amazing violin solos, I couldn't stand hearing people shrieking in adolescent excitement at DMB's lame violin solos, punctuated by flying dreadlocks and the musician's bulging biceps. I do appreciate live music, and I like to hear songs that are played a bit differently than how they sound on the radio. But in no way did DMB live up to expectations, and the concert was certainly not worth $40 a head. |
