Vapor Trails Tour

The Bottom Line Unbelievable

I've been an obsessive Rush fan for like 20 years now. For some reason or another every time they toured I managed to miss the concert. On July 12th 2002 I actually held in my hand a ticket for the Vapor Trails tour at the Tweeter Center in Boston. As the time to the concert got closer I began to get nervous. What if my hero's stunk up the joint. What if they just were a studio band. Anxiously I awaited. Watching the dryers (yes three running coin-op Maytag dryers) spinning on stage I wondered what the hell are these here for? What is their message? What does it all mean? They tumbled over and over, flop flop. I patiently wait then........ The opening E chord of Tom Sawyer and away we went. Rush blew me away! It was everything I had dreamed a Rush concert would be. Alex was amazing. I'm a guitar player and have admired his style. He managed to use a different guitar for about every song. Not a note was missed. The soaring solos along with the jaw dropping whammy work was amazing. Neil Peart had a massive drum kit and made sure he beat the crap out of each and every one. His 10 minute solo had the entire house standing and gave me chills. Geddy's voice was just like it sounds on the albums. Old songs he sang high pitched and new stuff in the new Geddy tone. He manages to sing, and play kick butt bass while triggering keyboards with his feet. Not many people can multitask that much. It's not a flashy setup. There are some surprises but the key here is the music. They played straight for three hours with a short 20 minute break. No opening band. They played songs from just about each Rush 'era'. Some of the stuff from Vapor Trails was rough but I think that was because it has no keyboards and a lot of guitar layers that are hard to do live. But everything else was awesum.

I can't wait for the next album and concert to come around. I'll never miss another one again! Alex, Geddy, or Neil, if you read this, thanks for all the music over the years. Don't ever stop....
