Former boyfriends sometimes bring you stuff
Written: Nov 07 '06 (Updated Nov 07 '06)
The Bottom Line: EVANESCENCE as ever, Pop-Metal for Goth-wannabes
Amy Lee shall know what teenage depression is. Even not being teenager anymore. Otherwise she wouldn't have released another piece of teenage breakup melodrama, Call Me When You're Sober, US Top 10 weeks ago.
EVANESCENCE has always been about Amy Lee ponderances on God, love and existence (always in deranged ways). God was a tourniquet; she even asked someone to bring her to life but life isn't that good, as deception is immortal and love is everybody's fool.
Amy Lee and her faceless comets spawn another harbinger for bedroom failed suicide attempts. Sugar-coated, as ever, with the former-teen-soprano unleashing her regret on SEETHER's former boyfriend alcoholic affection. Fortunately she's not dating anyone in NICKELBACK right now.
Goth is not about failed relationships - it is about impossible ones, check out GOETHE's Werther or BRAM STOKER's Dracula. Goth is not the kind of thing for drunken teens, unless they are LORD BYRON. EVANESCENCE, not Goth - they are Baroque pop-metallers somewhere between STRATOVARIUS and NIGHTWISH. Cheesy guitar soloing second only to cheesier keyboards. And they succeed in their pop-metal formula, if you don't take the whole thing seriously. As GWAR.
Check it out, the funny video, the black-coated laughing beautiful young woman in a bizarre bravado. WERTHER committed suicide. Amy Lee gets money out of her former boyfriend's addiction (and maybe, some domestic bullying too). This is for Buffy not for Dracula definitely! See ya.
