so right about Blair Witch, saw it the week it came out and fell asleep.
Oh and Matrix, while visually interesting, is a bore.

Magnolia was right on the edge. I feel bad about leaving it out. The Matrix would have made a Top 20 List. But only on the high end of the top 20. Eyes Wide Shut might have also snuck into a Top 20.
I could have made a top 1000 and Blair Witch never would have made it. The fact that millions of people couldn't tell the difference between being afraid and being jiggled into sea sickness doesn't make a movie worthy for me. I suspect I might have felt differently had I seen it at Sundance that year. But I didn't. Alas, or not...
And Eric? I write a lot. I don't know if I write so well, but I know I write a lot.

When all is said and done The Matrix will be just another forgotten highly successful science-fiction franchise starring that Hawaiian surfer dude. I thought it was a great movie - but I don't think it deserves a placement in a top 10 unless you basing it solely on movie grosses.
Now, I loved American Beauty - great movie. Great story, great performances. I still get slack for recommending to anyone to watch eXistenZ. Of course, those same people watched Costner's For The Love Of The Game four times in one day! Right on about Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, and The Straight Story.
Now, I couldn't get through The Limey - well, I mean I did get through it - but it bored me for some reason. Also, Election - funny the first time through, but now I'd rather go play golf if I knew how than see it re-ran yet again on TNT, and The Talented Mr. Ripley? Hmm. Interesting fact though, you picked four movies with connections to Jude Law or Spike Jonze.
As for Three Kings - well, I thought it was good - but the top position? Then again, heck if I know what I would put in the top position - that's probably why I don't write that many top ten lists. But, I'll give this film the benefit of time to see if lives up to your justifications.
Where did you learn to write so well by the way?
-Eric.

American films (Reply to this comment)
by fuche_bu
Since eXistenZ is Canadian, it is technically a NORTH American film. Buena Vista is Latin American. Hence, in the broadest definition, they are in fact American films. Nice job.

... I really did not (and still don't) get the whole fanfare surrounding American Beauty. No matter how hard I try it is just another film to me. Well done, sure but compared to many others that year I hardly think it deserved the Oscar. Oh well.
Surprising not to see The Matrix (refreshing even) but happy to see the inclusion of eXistenZ (I cannot express my love for this film adequately, even now) and also The Limey. Stamps is a marvel and makes me chuckle everytime I think back to him in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
Terrific writes! :)

great list (Reply to this comment)

"The Talented Mr. Ripley is romantic, thrilling, and complicated and it keeps getting better in my mind and every time I see it. "
because you said that, you're my best friend. I love love love love LOVE that film. And you're SO right, it gets better every time.
Can't believe you put the Straight Story on here...snooze. existenz? Seriously, that film was one long metaphor for sex and penetration, not that that is bad but to waste Sarah Polley is a crime.
Wanted to put Three Kings in my top 10, really did, but couldn't make it fit.
So right about the Best Picture nominees, and The Hurricane, and Sweet and Lowdown and The End of the Affair...so wrong about Boys Don't Cry. I loved it.
kudos for mentioning Bowfinger and Cookie's fortune, fine 4 star (out of 5) films from 99.
overall you continue to show great taste and clarity, and consistency which is much harder. Believe me

Although I found Fight Club more tongue-in-cheek with its message than you did (and would have ranked it #1), and felt The Limey an overwrought bore (with some pockets of genius), there's not much else I can disagree with here.
Another excellent effort, Dan.

The Matrix? (Reply to this comment)
by Cartman_2k
Well, I can totally agree with you on some movies. Fight club was a movie I liked a whole lot, and I must say the same about The Talented Mr. Ripley and American Beauty. Can't say I've seen the other movies on your list, but maybe I will check some of them out. I am shocked that The Matrix wasn't on your list as well! It is by far my favorite movie of 2000.
Great list!

Wonderful list, and some uniquely great insight. Although, like any other person, I'd have to disagree with some choices (Election ahead of Being John Malkovich?), this list is prime. The introductory introduction was also a nice touch.

Haven't seen many of these, but of the ones I have, you're on target. Bowfinger (not Bofinger) was a great screwy film. Only other typo I found was 'daught.' Thanks for such a helpful review!

So, you hated The Green Mile but loved Fight Club. I respect your opinion and you did an excellent job writing this article but I saw Fight Club and found it to be boring and not nearly a film worthy of any of the praise it has gotten. I'd almost be willing to say I hated it but parts were mildly entertaining. On a star rating, I'd give it two stars out of five. The Green Mile would easily get four from me.

What?!? No The Matrix on your list! C'mon man, it's one of the coolest, most kickass sci-fi thrillers I have seen in a long time!
Oh well, it's all good. This is still a tremendous list anyway with some great choices (particularly Fight Club, though you apparently were not 100% enthusiastic over it), and some surprises. (The Talented Mr. Ripley was decent, but I don't consider it Top 10 caliber. But it has one of my favorite movie lines of all time: "Better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody.")
I still haven't seen quite a few of these movies. The one I wanna see the most is eXistenZ. It sounds like the typical wacky Cronenberg movie.
A tremendous list with lots of effort put in. I'm surprised that Epinions still hasn't added a "Best of 2001" category on their database. If they do, then I look forward to reading that list as well.
Keep it up.
