Here are my specs in a nutshell:

X purity EXE edition case
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor
ECS Black Series 3 GHz Mobo
LG Black DVD/CD writer
EDIMAX Wireless Card... Awesome connection.
Western Digi 1TB SATA Hard Drive... 3Gb/s
LG 22" LCD... awesome.
OCZ platinum 4Gb Memory...
about to upgrade to 8Gb... still under 700
Logitech Keyboard/mouse kit...

all for under 700 bucks. I bought NOTHING used... nothing outlet...

Mobo has integrated GeForce Graphics card...
Sound/video cards are optional... that would tack on about another 100.. but still. A ways away from over a grand. I could buy so much crap with that.

Seriously... over a grand?

The motherboard. I would check to see that the mb was certified for the OS(Windows XP)by MS.
I have a new case, cpu(AMD XP1700+) and motherboard(ChainTech 7AJA2 which can run up to 2000+)on order(should be here soon). The memory is only PC133 but since I don't make a lot of money, I wanted to use all the parts out of this computer.
K6-2 400
FIC 502+ MB
Creative PCI64 sound card
NVidia Vanta video(saving for ATI 7000)
Western Digital WDC AC313000 hd 13 gig
Artec DVD-ROM 16X
Haupauge WinTv
256 meg PC133 memory
Windows XP Pro
plus I wanted to be ready for Longhorn when it is sent to beta testers.

Hi Rich!

Three comments from you! Wow! That makes me feel important!

I used mwave.com for everything as a reference to one place so it wouldn’t confuse the reader on jumping all over the Internet trying to find the prices. Yes I do shop around, I haven’t ordered anything from Computer geeks I will check them out.

The difference between the ATA/133 and ATA/100 is not noticeable. The ATA/133 has an Average Seek (Read) of 8.5ms average verses the ATA/100 of 8.9ms. I went with the ATA/133 because the motherboard was made for it and thought it might help somewhere down the line on performance.

Thanks for the comments,

Ron

As usual, very detailed and complete. This is exactly what I come to expect from your reviews. I would recommend this review to anyone looking to purchase a PC. I need to update my review that I wrote back in 2000. All your information is right on and very complete. Unfortunately now a days with options like Dell.com and Gateway.com and Gateway Country store, most people opt for the ease of ordering online or over the phone. They get stuck with what Dell or Gateway has to offer. I have always preferred to build my own and ever since I bought my first PC back in 1987, I have built all mine from scratch. Thanks for this great review.

I reread your review about when you bought/assembled the system.

I'm a bit surprised that mwave.com charged so much for the GeForce2 card... mwave.com prices are usually rather competitive.

If you need more Video power... I'd suggest looking at uBid or Computer Geeks.... just a few days ago, Computer Geeks sold the GeForce 4 Ti4600 card with 128MB of memory made by MSI for about $260! The card was refurbished however.

Nice review as always Ron.

These parts are available... I can't remember from where though...

I do remember seeing the information on www.tomshardware.com on their desktop cases review one to two months ago.

I'm not sure when you bought all your parts but... (Reply to this comment)

Ron,

from your experience... does ATA/133 make much of a difference from ATA/100. I'm using Western Digital Special Edition 80MB, 100MB, and 120MB drives with 8 MB of cache with an ATA/100 interface. I especially liked the 120GB Special Edition drives since I got them for $150 a pop from Dell.

If you bought the video card in the past month, you got ripped off Ron. You can get brand new Xtasy GeForce3s with 64MB for around $120 (I believe this is the Ti200) from uBid and often with the 1 cent shipping special. Computer Geeks on the web is selling the original GeForce3 (I'm not sure who the manufacturer is though) for $68! I was able to get a GeForce4 Ti4200 with 128MB of RAM for $191 at Best Buy and that's before a $20 mail-in rebate from VisionTek and the $10 Best Buy gift card is deducted from the price.

Funny, I bought a GeForce 2 GTS card with 32MB back in November for $90 after rebates from Buy.com. Now the new ATI Radeon 9700 is coming out blowing everyone else out of the water... including the GeForce4 Ti4600 with 128MB RAM... and by a huge margin too!

Can you help me on an unusual question? (Reply to this comment)

I've noticed that some computer chassis now come with the screwless snap-on drive glide rail. In case you're not sure what that is, I'm talking about these things that can fasten to a CDROM drive and allows the drive to be easily pulled out of the computer chassis 5" bay without using a screw driver. Do you know if any company makes them separately for purchase without buying a computer case?
