The Bottom Line These will cause you to defecate in your trousers

The following is my personal top ten greatest horror movies list. I'm not into the "new" horror movies such as "Urban Legends" and what not, only the truly terrifying. So with that in mind, grab a soda pop and some movie snackage, get yourself a copy of the following movies, and prepare to be horrified..........

10. The Omen (1976)-
This film, Directed by Richard Donner, is about a woman (Lee Remick) who gives birth to a stillborn baby and in order to shield her from the horrible truth, her husband (Gregory Peck) replaces an orphaned baby for their own unaware that the baby is the son of satan. Not too gory (although it features a decapitation scene) but has a certain tension throughout the movie that is very creepy. My favorite scene is when Damien's nanny hangs herself and screams, "It's all for you Damien."

9. Pet Sematary (1989)-
Directed by: Mary Lambert. I personally think that this is Stephen King's most frightening book-to-movie transfer. The whole idea of a cemetery that brings back the dead simply horrifies me. The acting is also excellent, and the haunting score only adds to the creepiness. I think the scariest scenes are the ones that contain the deformed Zelda character with the spine disease, AAAARGGH.

8. The Evil Dead Trilogy-
I guess you could say that I am cheating here a bit, but these movies are all very similar, so don't worry it's okay. Definitely Director Sam Raimi's best work. These masterpieces perfectly blend horror and slap-stick humor in a way that no film has ever done before. Very gruesome, but you'll get used to the gore because it is so excessive. The most memorable scene is when Ash battles his own possessed hand in Evil Dead 2.

7. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)-
This film, directed by Wes Craven, is the first and best of all the Freddy movies. The plot concerns a specteral child murderer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) who stalks and kills teenagers in their dreams. NOES is frightening and one of Craven's finest. Definitely check it out if you haven't already. My favorite scene is when Johnny Depp is eaten alive by a bed. Great fun.

6. Night of the Living Dead (1968)-
I am talking about the original one from 1968 of course. George A. Romero strikes home with this classic black and white movie about a group of seven people barricaded inside a house trying to survive the flesh-eating zombies roaming the countryside. Very gory for its time. A must-see for any true horror fan.

5. Halloween (1978)-
John Carpenter's masterpiece proves that you don't need gore to make a truly horrifying movie. This film is the daddy of all slasher films, although another great slasher, Black Christmas, predates it by about four years. For those of you who aren't familiar with the plot, it is about Michael Myers who murders his sister on Halloween as a child and later escapes his mental hospital fifteen years later to return to where he grew up to continue the murders. Michael Myers is one of the scariest boogeymen ever, and of course there is the freaky Halloween theme music that plays throughout the movie, which makes this movie an unforgettable horror experience.

4. The Shining (1980)-
Director Stanely Kubrick might not have translated the novel by Stephen King to the big screen exactly, but he did a fine job of making a great horror movie. This is about a family that becomes the winter caretakers for the Overlook Hotel. Before long, the father (Jack Nicholson) goes insane and tries to murder his wife (Shelley Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd. Jack Nicholson does a superb job of plunging into insanity and going on a rampage. Famous quote from the movie:"Heeeeere's Johnny."

3. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)-
This movie, directed by Jonathan Demme, is the newest one on the list. This film, based on the novel by Thomas Harris is about FBI agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) who is on the trail of serial killer Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) and tries to get clues from the brilliant but sick Dr. Hannibal Lecter played by Anthony Hopkins. Great movie with excellent acting is sure to give you nightmares. Favorite quote:"A cenus taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti...fpt-fpt-fpt." If you want some more Lecter action check out Manhunter and Hannibal.

2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)-
This disturbing film directed by Tobe Hooper is loosely based on the serial murders committed by Ed Gein. Very low budget almost documentary-style film is about a group of teenagers who run into leatherface (Gunnar Hansen) and his disturbed family who butchers them one by one. A must-see.

1. Suspiria (1977)-
Nightmarish film by Dario Argento about witches inhabiting a dance academy. Effective lighting and an amazing score by Goblin make this an unforgettable horror experience. It is difficult to put this one into words. Not many people have seen this, but they should. So check this one out immediately.
