The Simpsons. The elusive, controversial, crude humor, keep you young children away from kind of show. I love it. I have been a dedicated fan of the Simpsons for as long as I can remember.
The pilot show first aired on April 19, 1987 and has been going strong ever since. Every Sunday now at 8:00pm on FOX, a new episode appears every week. The innovative ideas that the writers come up with every single week for the last 14 years have never EVER repeated themselves. Every episode is new and unique in its own way. From my perspective that is an outstanding accomplishment that certainly deserves recognition.
The type of humor in the show is, without a doubt, intended for older viewers at least 14 years old. The best comparison I can think of is the show is much like the Comedy Central show South Park. The jokes are sometimes laid back and not too bad, but on some occasions they can get raunchy and, to some people, offensive. If you are laid back and just want to get a good laugh out of a show this is certainly the show for you. However if you are easily offended or do not like to hear foul language then certainly do not watch.
The Simpsons live in a small town called Springfield. The joke with that is that you never hear or see which state they are in, it's always just Springfield. They each go about their daily business every day and each episode deals with different characters interacting with the Simpsons in some way. The reason the show has been on for so long is because of the number of characters. The show can basically never run out. Between guest stars, regulars and people that are frequently on (once or twice a month) there are well over 100 different characters in the show. One of the reasons the show is so funny is because the show is so diverse with all of these different characters, each with his/her own personality and funny qualities.
The show's characters change from episode to episode but the main ones are as follows:
Homer: Father to Bart Lisa and Maggie, husband to Marge, works in Springfield Nuclear Power Plant as a safety technician (to give you an idea of how UNINTELLIGENT Homer is, meltdowns have tripled every year since he has worked as safety instructor for the plant).
Marge: Wife to Homer, mother to Bart Lisa and Maggie, works as a stay at home mom, constantly nagging the family to do what is right, (even though she has battled with a gambling and drinking problem).
Homer and Marge's three children;
Bart: Hellion of Springfield, gets into all sorts of mischief and illegal activity, for example, he once called a Big Brother Big Sister program to have a mentor come and play with him every day because Homer was too lazy to do things with him.
Lisa: The prodigy of the family, extremely smart child, the only one of the Simpsons who has excelled in everything she has tried (in my opinion she is not a very funny character, she is more used to make other characters seem funnier).
Maggie: The youngest Simpson, only a baby, constantly with a pacifier in her mouth which has prevented her from ever speaking on the show (except for the one DADA that came out of her mouth after Homer put her to bed) she is also getting herself into mischief but always comes out unscathed, example would be when Homer tried to get her to take swimming lessons but she was too afraid, however when he tried to coax her into the ocean later on that and started to drown, she (an infant to remind you) dove in and saved her obese father from drowning.
Ned Flanders: The Simpsons neighbor who adds a few senseless jabbering words after everything he says, example " Hi diddley ho neighborinos. or Absatively posilutely"
Chief Wiggum: In my opinion the FUNNIEST character on the show. Acting as the "flabby arm of the law" as the chief of police in Springfield, he is noted for blatantly showing off his lack of intelligence for example when describing his location engaged in a high speed chase: "Umm ok I'm on a road, looks to be asphalt, ohhh come on trees, shrubs... I'm directly under the Earth's sun....nnnnn now."
Principal Skinner: Principal of the local Springfield Elementary School, always a stickler for going by the book, to give you an idea of what his co-workers think of him, "I think that pole up Skinners a$$ has a pole up its a$$. (Edna Krabappel)"
I could go on forever with the characters but I think you get the idea.
Honestly I think everyone should give the show a shot. It certainly has its funnier episodes, but if you have the time and would like to have a good laugh, I highly recommend it.
