College Life 101

The Bottom Line It's not like t.v., or movies, or all those advertisements in magazines. As much as you think you are prepared...you aren't :)

I thought I had it all covered. I packed the basics, I was confident about my classes, and I was ready to shed my shy personality and make new friends. College was going to be a new beginning for me... so I thought.

When I picked my college, I thought it would be the perfect school for me. It was small, with under 5,000 students. All the facilites were brand new, including the dorms. And the dorms weren't your typical shoebox rabbit hutch kind of deals. They were real apartments. Everything looked great during my visit to the campus. People were friendly, the food was good, the classes looked challenging enough, but not too hard. I was ready to go.

The people ended up being racist bigoted hicks. The food was so awful, I hate Cinnamon Toast Crunch for three weeks straight, and on the days they were out of white milk, I had Count Chocula cereal with chocolate milk. The town was small and as a result there was nothing to do. And the small friendly atmosphere? It was like a huge high school clique all over again.

The classes that looked great were terrible. I can honestly say that I did not learn anything new, academically at least.

And those awesome apartments? When you have dustbunnies rolling around like tumbleweed, mildew growing in your shower, mold growing on your roommates dishes, and roommates who don't clean because they "never had before, why start now?" those awesome apartments become dirty dumps. I gave up trying to clean after two weeks, because my roommates stopped seeing me as a roommate and saw me as a maid. My roommate stole from me, they all had loud parties in our living room at 3 a.m. (knowing I had class at 8). I would get phone calls late at night waking me up from people asking for my roommate. My roommates had very little respect for me, and as a result I had little for them. Bringing me back to the whole clique-ish thing...

"Oh, you're that weird roommate of Kasey's, aren't you?"

I ended up so miserable and depressed because my dream college was turning into a nightmare. I missed more and more classes because of my lack of sleep. I found myself trying to catch up on sleep during the day. I stopped going to activites because I was known as "Kasey's crazy maid roommate." The college was unsympathetic and denied my request for a new roommate.

Frustrated, I left. I don't recommend the college to anyone.

Academically, I didn't learn a thing. But I did learn a few lessons. College is not going to be the same for everyone. Some may love it, and some may hate it. Not all campuses are the same either. I've visted a larger campus several times now and love the diversity. People are open minded. I've gone just to act like a college kid and blend in to see what its really like, instead of taking the tours that show you the sparkling side of college life. I've also learned that you can't make everyone happy, so you should put your feelings and goals relating to your life first and foremost. Hopefully college will be much better this time around.
