I have been a Sierra Trading Post (STP) shopper for years and have successfully stuffed many birthday bags, Christmas stockings, and boxes from the great deals Ive gotten there
and Ive treated myself a great number of times as well. It is a wonderful source of high quality merchandise for people who care more about the quality of the item than the color or style of it. If youre looking for a top-brand backpack with certain specifications but dont require a certain color, STP is the place to go. Youre likely to find something perfectly suitable (or better) at half the retail price. They sell overstocks, closeouts, and seconds, and the listings online and in their catalogs are very clear about the quality. Be aware of what youre ordering (seconds are what they are, and sometimes the flaws are noticeable), and youre likely to be very happy with what you get.
When I first started shopping STP, they were almost exclusively an Outdoor apparel and equipment clearinghouse and operated through a rather primitive catalog and phone ordering system. In recent years they have branched out significantly to offer housewares, business and casual wear, and other less predictable odds and ends (like remote sensing weather stations, art work, games). And now, of course, they have a website to allow for easy online ordering. Ive had good experiences ordering via phone or over the internet. It all works well.
Overall Ive been very happy with the quality of the merchandise Ive gotten from STP. The descriptions in the catalog cuts are accurate and often above-and-beyond helpful, with information like runs small, order half size larger for certain items. Their shipping prices are reasonable, and they offer various speeds of shipment. In years past, the shipping seemed very slow, but they have remedied that, and shipping is always very prompt. It is easy to track your packages online, too, so you know when it will be delivered. Their exchange policy is also very generous and customer-centered.
Which leads me to the customer service. I am always very impressed with STP's customer service, and I have tried all the interfaces: phone, live chat, email. The response has always been prompt, helpful, and friendly
and again, often above-and-beyond helpful. Operators are willing to check the product of interest to scrutinize it for seemingly trivial details of importance only to a particular buyer. They have been very helpful when Ive needed to exchange something or return it. They have promptly provided a missing part if an item arrived incomplete or cheerfully refunded the purchase price and covered the return shipping if they made an error in a shipment. And most importantly to me, when Ive called, I have reached a real person immediately, and that person has always been able to address my issue immediately.
STP is my number one online vendor. If I need anything, I check with them first. They dont always have what I need, but I trust them and return to them again and again.
