Worst ISP...EVER

Written: Jun 19 '01
Pros:If I could get connected to the network, I might be able to find some.
Cons:Support, access speeds, access
The Bottom Line: Worst ISP... EVER

Once apon a time, there was a magical internet service provider that provided stellar service, excellent download speeds and a connection every time you dialed in. This ISP was affordable and compatible with practically every PC/Modem combination you could throw at it. This ISP received a glowing review from myself in which I could not stop raving. Then one horrible day, the ill-fated decision was made to merge with xo.
Here is a current break down as I have experienced this company.

Connections/Connection Speed
First off, after finding my new access number (addressed later), I dialed in and instantly noticed a decrease in download speed from 5k/sec to 3k/sec. My connect speed had also dropped from 48,600 (EVERY TIME) to 33333 and finally to a consistent 26,400. Unfortunately, I now wish those days were still here as I can not even get connected any more. It first started out that I would make 20 attempts in a row to connect, then there was never a connection available. I have updated my modem drivers, double checked all my connection properties/preferences and called support to find out that the engineers "didn't properly test many access numbers, one of which is the only one available for me to dial in to." I don't even want to start in on the fact that I only have one available local access number in Sacramento, California..the state capital with over 300,000 population. This excuse of my access number not being tested properly is by the way, the only one they have given me as I still can not connect using their service. All other companies I try (including Netzero and my companies dial up) are successful EVERY time.

Pricing
I suppose pricing is comparable if you consider $14.95 a month for no internet access what so ever a great deal. If I could connect, I would be pleased with this rate as it is the second lowest rate I have seen advertised aside from being free.

Service
HORRIBLE!!!! Support can't get me connected; Their brain-dead analysts take me through the paces of changing all the check boxes in my dial properties and trying modem init strnigs that don't even work with my modem. They talk down to me and treat me as if I am the stereo typed "idiot user" and have no idea how to use a PC. The way I found out that xo had changed my access number is when I couldn't connect to my old one..hey that's great!

Overall
If you like being treated like a moron, not being able to connect to your internet service, and being charged $14.95 a month for the right, then xo.com is the internet provider for you!!! Seriously, I truly wish I had something nice to say about this company, but fact is that I don't. There have to be companies out there that provide better service and are happy to have your business. Having not been in the market for an ISP for four years, I'm beginning the search. When I find a great one, I'll write all about it.
