Culturally Diverse... Elsewhere

The Bottom Line Children should be raised with the culture of the country they live in as their primary focus to ensure they fit in at all levels of their later life.

I am neither American nor do I live in the US, best I can do is claim to have gone there three times and have some US mates here in Thailand.....and I like the Seahawks.

So why do I write...well because being "Culturally Diverse" is not something that is exclusive to the US and if I might be so bold as to add, the US is only "Culturally Diverse" in patches, you can still walk into towns around the US where "Culturally Diverse" means coming from Washington State. The Uk offers a far more wide spread cultural diversity.

But to the point, My wife is Thai, our 4 year old daughter is my step daughter and our second child is 3 months away from being born. When I walk down the street people smile, are ultra nice to my daughter... just 10 years ago, when I first came here, holding hands with a local girl in Bangkok got you stared at and your wife or girlfriend instantly branded a "bar girl".

Thailand is still far from being even slightly Culturally Diverse but at least tolerance and acceptance are now part of life here and your not considered a leper for having a Thai wife.

It's difficult to know exactly why this acceptance has begun other than the fact that Thai-Foreign weddings and relationships are becoming far more common amongst all levels of society. Even the King's eldest daughter married an American Business man, though that is still an ultimate sore point and shows that this acceptance is possible superficial.

We raise our daughter as a Thai, her English culture will be limited very much to food and language, and our Son even though he may look foreign as he grows up will also be raised as a Thai. We as a family will never move back to the UK, for them to have no English roots I don't consider to be a dissadvantage or denial of their heritage.

As they grow older they will ultimately be able to make and voice their own opinions on this and then I guess we'll find out whether we were right.
