Thanks for the great contribution to this category. I liked the fact that you really included your own thought process, including your mistakes. I too applied to at least one school about which I later thought, Why would i have ever applied there? It's good for others to know they're not alone on these things!

My daughter is starting a Ph.D program in a couple of weeks. Coming from UPenn she could have had many choices. One reason she applied to the 4 she did was because she only applied to schools that gave 100% financial assistance. For ex. I think it was Columbia..only gives 40 -60%. NYU - 100%. She was almost tossing a coin being NYU and Emory - similar financial packages. I'm glad she chose NYU and she did so for a number of reasons, some of which you pointed out. Enjoyed the review. jo
