How to EXCEL in Business...

Written: Jun 19 '01
Pros:Numerous useful functions, fairly simple to use
Cons:Expensive, can take a bit of time getting used to.
The Bottom Line: Great product from the Microsoft Office Suite but be prepared to spend some time if you want to get full use out of this program.

As a business major I have been pretty much forced into learning all the many uses for Microsoft Excel. Excel is the only accepted spreadsheet program used/recommended for my various business classes. However, having been through these classes I was able to realize how useful and valuable Excel is.

With Excel you can do pretty much anything you wish. Whether it be a simple spreadsheet or complex diagrams and charts. Another great benefit of Excel is that it can be incorporated into the other Microsoft Office programs(Word, Powerpoint, etc.) This becomes convenient when you are preparing a chart to use in Powerpoint and you simply export it into the powerpoint file. It is also useful with Word to attach charts/graphs to a document and also to provide a more reader-friendly summary of the various figures that were used in the spreadsheet.

Excel is basically limitless as to what you can do with it. The only problem is taking the time to realize all of the benefits. This admittedly can be troublesome but is extremely beneficial once you have learned the various uses. However, for the simple things such as creating charts, etc. for your data it is pretty much self-explanatory and it guides you through the steps needed to create what you want.

The main problem I have with Excel is the price. It is rather expensive to purchase this as well as the whole Office package(which I would recommend rather than buying Excel individually.) However, this is money well spent especially considering the time it could save for an organization or small business or even just for the personal use.
