Pearl Harbor (2001) (Reply to this comment)
by colonialpara
Come on, Joe. The attack scenes on Pearl being fantastic!
No way. I saw Knox class frigates from the 60s and 70s and Spruance class destroyers from the 70s that had been mothballed tied up at the piers.
As soon as I saw that I said no way.
This is a B- movie at best and should never be on anyone's best list ever.

Joe, a correction (Reply to this comment)
by colonialpara
The correct name if THE MEDAL OF HONOR. It is NOT the Congressional Medal of Honor.
The medal is awarded by the President "in the name of the Congress."
This mislabeling has been going on for years and while military folks do it, too, it is incorrect to use it.
Likewise, people who are awarded the Medal are not Medal of Honor 'winners.' They are recipients of the Medal as it is NOT a contest to be won.

Technically, you are incorrect. . . (Reply to this comment)

when you say that "Saving Private Ryan" was the most honored film of 1998. "Shakespeare In Love" actually received seven Oscars, among them Best Picture. It was even more of an upper, than "Ryan" was a downer.

Pearl Harbor sucked big time....But I'm glad you ranked Enemy At The Gates as high as you did. I loved that film.

Very impressed with your film knowledge. Not many people outside the UK know "The Dambusters". A classic you should check out is called "Ice Cold in Alex". One of my favourite films of all time, let alone War films. Great review.

I would take your list of Other WW 2 Films Worth Their Salt over your top 10 any day of the week and three times on Wednesdays. Especially since Kwai and The Great Escape would probably be #1 and #2 on my list...
That being said, you prove the heck out of all your choices, so this is a great list. Plus, you at least listed all those other good films, so you've given a lot of options for people looking for good war films...
Good stuff...

is golden but I didn't like PEARL HARBOR very much. Either way, great insight in your review!
Take care

Maybe this will prod me to write about some of the older ones missing even from your list of contenders, such as "The Story of G. I. Joe." "Paisą/Paisan" i have written about. If I tried to make a list, it would include "Twelive o'clock High", "From Here to Eternity", and probably "The Thin Red Line" and maybe "The Big Red One."

I can't believe that you picked Pearl Harbor over films like Patton and The Guns of Navarone. But hey, to each his own, right?
Otherwise, a very solid list. I'm glad that you picked Saving Private Ryan as your top choice; I think it is the definitive war movie (in spite of some minor flaws).
